Cycle world magazine
« on: August 06, 2019, 05:33:21 PM »
I was in the local supermarket the other day, stopped to look at the magazine section.
Cycle World had a test with Royal Enfield Continental GT  vs. Kawasaki 800.
I haven't seen much in CW in a while, I was going to get that issue.
Until I saw the price, $12.00! Is that the regular price of every issue?

Don’t get too excited, it was probably there last paper issue, they are going 100% digital.

I believe it is Motorcyclist that is going ‘digital only’.  Both are owned by Bonnier, which apparently decided there is room for only one in print.  It seems to me maybe there is only room for one, period.

$12 for a single magazine is crazy.

$12 for a single magazine is crazy.

That's buying them one at a time in a store.   Much cheaper if you have a subscription.   I sort of like it ... I've been reading Kevin Cameron's articles for so long that I really enjoy getting the next copy in the mail.

My guess is this - the model is for most readers to be steered to a heavily discounted subscription by the high supermarket price.  That has the effect of boosting circulation (i.e. holding advertising prices up) because any subscriber that buys one buys six.  Then the few sales that do occur at $12 make some extra money.

A friend gave me two issues of Cycle World, I enjoyed reading both, something that I can't say about the Motorcyclist back issues he also gave me.

Yeah, OK. The rare issue, or single article,  I find interesting, I'll read at the store.

Currently available for the reduced rate of $3 per issue.  Before jumping at such a great deal, though, read the fine print:  at the end of the year, the subscription is automatically renewed, presumably at the $12/ issue regular rate.  I cancelled my old subscription when I saw on my credit card statement that they had billed me for the full subscription price when my old subscription expired.

I'll keep an eye out.   If anyone tries pulling that, I'm done.   Hope not, I enjoy the actual mag ....

CW is now quarterly with much different cover and binder. Reminds me of 'Iron and Air' type than CW of old.

Good content. Magazines are a dying media form. The trend is to get as much for free as you can...this just clogs up what you are reading with ads to pay the bills.

I still prefer the CW style until it's gone.

I haven't had a magazine subscription since the 90s when I discovered Guzzi. No need to look at other stuff or read a Guzzi test by guys that have no clue about them.
The Kid still has Cycle World, however, and I enjoyed the latest issue while sitting on the throne.  If were in the market, I'd give the Interceptor a hard look.

The only magazine I pick up is Roadrunner.  I am more interested in the rides than the latest race replica bike.

My hope is to one day retire, hit the road and do as many of the "shamrock tours" that I can before my money runs out.

4 days of riding out of the same base camp, followed by 3 days to get to the next shamrock tour location.

He got a huge compensation package, but a big chunk of that was Sirius stock...  Oddly, even though they are going gangbusters, took over XM, and then Pandora, the stock price has been swirling the bowl for 10 years

I suspect our generation will the last to actually pick up a paper magazine and read it for information or entertainment.

Yep.  Vinyl records cost more now than they did 50 years ago.

Tube amplifiers are a Big Thing among audiophiles.

You can barely afford a 60s or 70s V8 of any brand.

Used book stores haven't slackened up at all around here, going great guns.

I doubt if there's any fear for the printing business any time soon.

There is. Lots of pessimism in the industry, your doubt notwithstanding. If there is a print magazine that you love, help sustain it - buy, subscribe, tolerate missteps. Maybe it will survive. Once it is gone, it ain't coming back. All your favorite journalists will be digital, sadly.
It gives a whole new meaning to "Stop the Presses!"

I just subscribed to Rider, glad I did.  I was a little shocked at how thin it is compared to its size back in the 90s.  Three years subscription was a deal, I recommend we all subscribe.
