Help Rocker59 pick a bike
« on: August 08, 2019, 03:54:30 PM »
OK friends, how's about your 2-cents worth?  I need to put a Guzzi back in my garage.

Here are my two current options.  What would you pick, and why?

2001 Cal EV - Nice bike with 37.000 miles, and very affordable price.

2015 Cal14 Custom - Nice bike with 15.000 miles, and moderate price.

01 at a very affordable price. Thats why. Ride the EV for a couple of years, then buy a 1400 at a much discounted price, down the road. The blue 01 would be sweet with some  hard bags. either HB or Nat. Cycle Cruiseliners.

Geees, you've already owned a Bassa and didn't like it.  Now you're looking at a C14 and it's more feet forward that the V11.

The Bassa's ergos weren't good for me.  Nor, the short rear suspension.  The EV sits a lot differently.  Higher seat and floorboards.

Cal14 Custom in blue is just bada$$.  I think with the floorboards and the addition of a Corbin seat, I'd be fine.

I'd take the blue EV. Lighter, enough power, just fix the seat

They're very different motorbikes. I'd go the Eee-Vee but only because I find the 1400's too big and heavy.

I can't agree with your analysis but if you're good with both, then there's no comparison with the performance of the 1400.  It's a smooth and powerful runner.   You're comparing a modern vehicle to one that's 30 years older design. (Make sure you have a demand sensor.)  It's certainly more fun than an Indian Chief.

I will say the V11 is light and tossable and just as easy to ride around town as a scooter (actually, just guessing since I've never ridden a scooter).  :thumb:

As Klaus schwitz would say... It depends.

-What other motorcycles do you have in your garage?
-Do you want something that is classic Guzzi? Or a modern interpretation of a power cruiser?
-Is weight a factor?
-Simplicity or complex?
-And of course most importantly, the greenbacks it will take to purchase and then add the modifications you want to make it yours.

sounds to me like you need to ride them both and let the one that speaks to you most make your decision.

But as we are required to vote, if I was buying this as my only Moto Guzzi I would probably go for the EV. It's classic looks clean if it's reasonably priced and has been well taken care of that's a lifetime motorcycle. The 1400 is an amazing bike, but it's size and complexity would give me more pause. Of course I say that having just purchased an mgx-21  :bike-037:.

Bassa has been gone for about six years.  Didn't like the ergos.  Short shocks weren't a help, either.

I would say it depends on where and how you intend to ride it. Short trips. gravel , back roads EV
Longer rides, Two up,  Highway , 1400 all day  . Just did a 6,000 mile trip from Maine to Montana on my 1400 custom and she never missed a beat. Wouldn't be my first choice for an every day, around town bike, it's motor and long wheelbase makes it an awesome mile muncher.   Good luck with your choice!    No wrong answer.
