Guzzi have finally included self cancelling turn signals on the V85.  The problem as I see it, the time it takes to automatically turn it off is far too long.

Maybe there is a tweak available using Guzzidiag, but I didn't see one, using the Cali 1400 option.  Perhaps when there is a specific V85 version for Guzzidiag, it will be included.

I use a,Kisan Flasher on all my bikes. Shuts off after 30 flashes unless I am on the brake which pauses the counter.

Thinking back to my reentry to motorcycling in 1984.  I'd picked up a leftover '83 Yamaha Virago 750.  I think the basic logic worked something like this:

- if flasher was activated while bike was stopped, it continued to flash.  It did not time out while stationary.
- once bike was in motion, it counted wheel rotation.  Once a predetermined distance had been covered, the turn signal would cancel.

Seemed logical to me.  As I recall, the dash turn indicators were large enough to get your attention, unlike my 2014 CB1100, which uses tiny LEDs, and does not self-cancel.

That worked well....hit the turn signal instead of the horn....or the starter. BMW did that, too. Drove me nuts.

Yeah, real complicated. So having a turn signal, horn and starter button like you currently do still driving you nuts?

My '87 BMW K100RS self cancelled based on motion, distance and time. Guess it gave the ECM something to do in between squirts & sparks.

It's cheap insurance. Strange surroundings, long day, lots of traffic, preoccupied with other events and it's easy to forget to cancel that last left turn you made. So you are indicating a left turn as you enter an intersection you intend to pass straight through.  The car coming at you actually plans to turn left. He trusts your signal and next thing you know you eat a face full of Chevy door and it's your fault.

It's all about reducing pilot workload. One less task that HAS to be done. Let George do it.

 I have had a couple of older Yamahas that had self canceling signals.  The were a timed affair.  And they failed after a few months.

Just as bad leaving your right turn signal on. Driver at intersection coming from either direction thinks you're turning right so pulls out in front of you....bang!!

I take the bulbs out of the front indicators. I don't care if anyone in front of me knows whether I'm turning or not. It's only drivers behind you that need to know because they can hit you. Drivers in front of you cannot hit you....you can only hit them. (Except for oncoming traffic in which case turn signals are irrelevant. If you get hit by oncoming traffic somebody F'd up majorly.)

Courtesy does not outweigh my own safety. Call it extreme defensive riding.

Never had a problem with flasher units not flashing on older Guzzis.

It's a big boat. The moment I recall as the worst was when I turned left onto a road that has a stop light right after that. I still had my left blinker on and was headed forward. But, the car pointed toward me didn't know that. We nearly collided and I realized it was my fault. That was a lesson that helped me remember to hit that button.

As an aside, it is a bit of a bummer that Guzzi advertised the 1400's as having self cancelling signals only to find out that it was not the case. (The original documentation touted it.)

You could just constantly punch the "cancel" button like I do. Its gotten to the point that I hit the damn thing every time I turn (not just intersections). Also, I try to hold my thumb on the switch until its time to cancel. My '16 BMW has self-cancelling indicators, but they take a while to turn off. The Harley solution (like the previous BMW attempt) is effective, but I never warmed up to it. The previously mentioned Yamaha self cancelling signals worked well as I recall...

  So this week I went ahead and purchased one of those el cheapo simple flashers with a squeaker on the end of it (chinese made thingie) and it is loud enough  when stopped but not so great when under way. As I am turning the corner I can hear it and it may be enough to kick my brain in gear to turn the signal off.

Ron mentioned Kisan Signal Minder which looks like a good solution that is worth a try, albeit a little pricey. They also sell a (potentially) useful little gadget that I might try, a motorcycle traffic light changer. I know that there are some stoplights that I come to regularly that I would still be waiting at if I was a law abiding citizen. If, for $24, I can be right in the eyes of the locals, I'd be happy.

My 68 looper doesn't have turn signals but one time I did a lane change and forgot to put my arm down. Sure was sore after about ten miles.......

My 1985 Cagiva Elephant had a buzzer linked to the turn signals -- quite simple -- shouldn't need to spend $130 for a Kisan special module.

RE: V85.   The manual states that the turn signal will self cancel after 40 seconds or 1/3 mile --- and will reset to zero if you come to a stop before it times out.   Not very useful in my view.   My old GL1800 is a bit short at about 10 seconds -- 15 - 20 seconds would be about right and 200 - 300 ft for distance.

Maybe if you had self cancelling turn signals, you’d get the situation where the rider turns the signal on too early and it cancels just before he turns, but he continues around the corner.
An oncoming car fails to give way to the bike because he doesn’t know that he’s turning and the rider sues the manufacturer for some perceived deficiency in the system..
