Once upon a time in Hollywood...opinions? (NGC)
« on: August 19, 2019, 06:10:42 PM »
Hello Folks, my wife /son are big fans of Quentin Tarantino movies, and are excited about this new one.  Going to the theatre has gotten so expensive, that  I usually only go if its a flick with great special effects that benefit from the big screen, otherwise I usually wait for netflix, or grab a red box video.
Have any of you seen this flick? What are your opinions?
Thanks
Rick

PS . I think the last Tarantino film I watched and really liked, is Inglorious Basterds. :thumb:

It was great.  My favorite QT movie.

I rate #1 with Jackie Brown and Pulp tied for 2nd.  Again, I laughed so hard that the guy in front of me left and said that it wasn't funny when I was laughing.  This is a warning for Guzzi riders that retire and go to $4 matinees in a theater with older folks with a sticks in their asses.  I suppose if you don't remember Hollywood guys like James Stacey, Sam Wanamaker, Brian Wilson, Polanski, Sharon Tate, Bruce Lee and Charlie Manson, you might not get it.  I really felt sorry for poor Steve McQueen, he "never had a chance".

Actually, Jackie Brown was the only QT movies that had a legitimate plot (OK, Reservoir Dogs).  But this was Inglorious Bastards done right.  I'd go on for more but I have to work on the flame thrower I keep in the shed.

Later guys.

I thought it was a strange movie that dragged at times (it's long), but overall I enjoyed it. It brought back some memories of the late 60s and had some big surprises. My guess is that Tarantino fans will enjoy it. (I enjoyed 'From Dusk to Dawn.' Of course that one had Salma Hayek, but this one has Margot Robbie)

I laughed, perhaps inappropriately, too.

My opinion is that it's a very good movie.

Not as  fast paced, certainly, as some of his others (Kill Bill, for example). But it slowly rose in my esteem as I watched it. Brad Pitt gives a great performance as a stunt man. The recreation of 1970's California is extremely impressive. The climax is very violent, and I shouldn't say more than that.

On the whole it is not as over-the-top as the run of the mill Tarentino movie. Whether that is bad or good is a matter of taste. Although at first I was bored, I now think I'll see it again.

<spoiler alert>

My commentary is life is so screwed up that reality is worse than living in a Tarantino movie.

I remember walking out of the theater with the wifey after seeing Pulp Fiction and looking at each other saying “WTF was that”!  I’ve seen it several times since, and love it even more.

I want to see this one.

The Bruce Lee family is evidently very upset with the way Bruce was portrayed in the movie.

I read that.  Brad Pitt decided not to go through the entire scene in due respect.

And Cliff Booth, well he had issues with his wife but was never convicted.

Whilst it's no Pulp fiction, I thought it was a great movie. More of a homage to that era than anything and great fun. Don't think it's a spoiler to say it contains some sickening violence as all Tarantino movies. Planning on seeing it again. I saw Pulp Fiction three times at the theatre when it came out.

Pitt and Leo have great chemistry.  I would watch Margo Robbie in anything.  I loved Bruce Dern's cameo.  But, there seemed like about 1/2 your too long for me.  There were some slow spots. I give it about a 7 out of 10.

Looking forward to seeing it...friends with similar taste have said they enjoyed it as well.

The last QT movie I really enjoyed was Hateful Eight...shot near Telluride in winter...great plot, loooooooong movie...but well done, in my view.

I did enjoy Inglorious Basterds, but Brad Pitt's fake accent was such a turnoff all the time, would have been more enjoyable without that drivel.

Wasn't Django also a QT film...another good one...

Sorry I will dissent.  When he dedicated 5 min to walking through LAX or when he let Brad drive down Sunset in a Karman Gia for what felt like an hour  he lost me.  And the ending is pure Inglorious Bastards.  I think it will be fine at home but I felt the romance with history was too gratuitous to keep me in a theater for 3 hours.

Paul

1.  I think it is his best, even better than Jackie Brown and Pulp Fiction.
2.  The slow spots in the movie were subtle and hilarious anticipatory pauses when the audience had a notion where the scene was headed.  I think the pacing was really good and only made it better.
3.  Say for the credits for bonus.
4.  Great detail of nostalgia of '60s TV/Hollywood

Margot Robbie isn't Sharon Tate and Timothy Olyphant isn't James Stacey.   Neither of the those characters ended up well in real life.  I am not sure many noticed Olyphant's Stacey riding off on the Triumph (perhaps that was another slow part in the movie?).

Lots of nice vintage autos in the movie as well, and some you don't see too often anymore.  I'm tempted to go see it again just to pay more attention to all the period details.  Very well done.

I am pretty sure QT plays a small role as an actor in all of his  past films, did he come out in this movie?

3 hours and senseless violence put me off a bit, though.

It is good. It is long. Full of familiar references, characters, and circumstances. My 17 year old son went with a bunch of his friends and was confused throughout, being unfamiliar with Manson, Tate, Polanski, etc... Not too much danger of that with this crowd. If you can go to a matinee, get senior prices, and sneak in your Raisinettes and Pepsi, it can be a pretty pleasant, cheap afternoon (guzzi content).

I truly think QT produces his movies so you HAVE to see them another few times to get parts you missed.  I love gratuitous sex and violence in movies.

Having said that, we walked out of John Wick 3.  Don’t waste your time or money.
