NGC~ virus warning!!
« on: September 14, 2019, 11:50:30 AM »
Was just cruising thru the threads and got an emergengy pop up that I had a virus in this old iMac that is no longer supported by Apple that said do not restart or shut down this computer and a click button to describe(?) the issue. I did nothing but close the Chrome browser and got back on wildguzzi~ so far with no issues???
I have had issues with Chrome on my (more) current iMac and had to move to the Opera browser. Anyone know of problems with Chrome??

Joe , you did the correct thing . Most of these *warnings* are nonsense , I get one a couple of times a year , sometimes they even seem threatening . Are you running any sort of virus protection ?

Do not restart or shut down?    And click on this button to fix it?

Certainly was a bogus message like "This is the Credit Card Service Center.   Your Credit Card has been compromised and is being used by someone else.   Go to this site to recover ...." or whatever ...

I wouldn't worry about it.

No, none available for this old dog!! It is now deployed at our Allen house (near the grands). Only used once a month or so.  Will convert to a Chrome or linux op system if it starts to be a bother!!

As long as your personal stuff is backed-up, I say let 'er crash.

AFAIK, no virus can physically harm the 'puter, and if you have contingency plans to replace it anyway, why worry about it?

BTW, I'm still using a isolated computer (no internet connection possible) with W3.2 on it.

I had the same thing happen yesterday using Safari. It looked like a real Mac logo warning, but I ignored it anyway. Later on I hit restart on the computer, just to be safe cause that usually wipes out stuff from the cache, but it didn't restart. Had to manually start it up, so ran the utilities diagnostic tool and it came up empty, so I guess there was no virus? Not a computer guru, but used them a lot at work, both PC and Mac, so I think there's not much else to do unless you take it into a computer store an let them check it out.

I used to use Chrome but went back to Safari a while back. Anything to avoid Google!

I use Malwarebites and Sophus on my macs to check and clean up any suspected viruses etc. they both have free ( but safe) downloadable apps.

When they say don't shut it off, they want you to click onto something that will allow them down load into your computer.  If it is really worrisome ,  first click out of your  wifi.  with the wifi off, they cannot down load anything.  Now erase your history and shut off the computer.  Wait about ten seconds after shutdown and restart.
Boot back up and go where you want.  But I would advise not going to the site that gave you the warning.
