WOW! You can't get any better provenance than that. It will be interesting to see what it goes for.

Ss expected, bidding has ceased after reserve was hit.  Gonna be a flurry of last minute bids.  Still predicting close to $20K.  That's a time capsule.

For that price you could get a 27K mile R100GS...

https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1990-bmw-r100gs-2/

(In other words, $17K is a lot of money but quality, long term maintainable classics are not getting any cheaper)

That went surprisingly low!

Prices are now clearly depressed compared to the recent past.

A bike like this would probably be a display piece- like putting $17k in a jar on a shelf to look at and discuss- and not equivalent to buying a restored bike for $17k that will be used & ridden, even if only casually?  $17k is $17k and within the budget of many people, but...

this specific bike would probably need a lot of soft parts replacement (at least) as preventive work if it was bought to be ridden & trusted.  Then the value of low miles is gone.  Rebuilding it to ride it would also defeat the point of buying such a "new" bike.   I really like original paint.

in general, how does the sale price of this time capsule sale compare to restored rider sales?

Really well fettled examples are running a few K more,  but this bike will take several thousand to make rideable and reliable.  I’m a sucker for time capsule bikes myself, but the market is usually rational.  It sold for $17K because it likely needs a substantial additional investment.  A non-running bike will not attract top dollar.

Other than new tires what would it need? Last rebuild on my '76 LM was 30 years ago. It's been ridden hard since then with about a dozen track days in the mix. The seals are still fine. Stock suspension was never great but this one hasn't had the miles to wear out. Seems like it went for a bargain price to me.

Many bikes/cars stitting for over 30 years and then put into service devolop oil leaks from seals and gaskets...I would think at the least the wheel bearings need servicing... Pete, did you race the bike on bearings with 30 year grease? i'm just too cheap to spend big money for a bike when one 1/3 the cost functions just as well...

Rough, Everything was gone through 30 years ago. Engine torn apart and rebuilt by myself. Transmission rebuilt with close ratio gears by Manfred Hecht, new wheel bearings, etc. Very little done since. Starts right up every spring with new gas. The bike was two years old when I bought it. I think I know it pretty well.

There's a significant difference between a motorcycle that was rebuilt 30 years and used on occasion since and one that has sat unused for the last 30 years after covering only a few thousand miles.

A year and a half ago I bought a ā€˜99 Ducati in mint condition with about 6000 miles.  After only three months of effort including a top end reseal I had it completely dialed in

Ohh this thread. Well I'm not gonna put a lot of mileage on, so I'll bring it up to running condition compromising as little originality as possible, and see how she goes. Might not even clean the motor. ;)  I just put 650 miles on my Porsche turbo (which has only 36K on the clock) running up to Pebble Beach and all, which may have cost me $5-10K in value, who knows. But worth it.

I do feel that I got lucky. For reference, my max bid was $25K for the LeMans. But I seek out low mileage original examples of things, so I am just willing to pay when the rare example pops up. The seller is a real gentleman, so I believe his claim that he drizzled oil in the cylinders and turned the motor every so often over that 37-year storage.

I think that could be argued. Lots of folks here thought if history were to repeat itself that this example would fetch well over 20K.

You know..  They are realy ment to be driven/rode..  So ya, its nice to see them out..  Not saying daily ride the thing...  but they deserve to be run.. that's where the art lay.
