Author Topic: Sport 1100 Sidestand (Read 4058 times)

My '96 Sporty's side stand snapped while being shipped to me in AZ. It appears to have bent right before it snapped. I have scoured the world for a while now looking for a replacement and have come up empty handed. I'd be interested to get your thoughts on how you would address this. What would be your 'Plan B' if you couldn't find a replacement? Any wisdom you may have for me is welcomed. Thank you

If it's mounted as on the carbed Sport, I'd guess you were lucky the stand snapped, rather than the casting on the timing cover. I'd seize the moment & fix a sidestand to the pork chop - a chap in NZ found one from a Suzuki that work well, though you'd have to give up using your hand to deploy it & just use your foot.

Daytona, Cenauro and V11 Sport and V11 Lemans all had a similar setup which might broaden your search.

Increase your search to include V11 Sport / LeMans and Daytona.

Also, never ship with the sidestand deployed!

^^^^ yeah, what they are saying. It's fragile. Seems like I remember Harper's having some. Have you checked?

Yeah, I left it in the hands of a "professional" and got it back with a snapped side stand and some paint damage. Sweet!

I'm pretty sure that I have a couple of side stands lying around the barn. I'm going to look for them this weekend and send you a couple of pictures to see if you are interested in one. Can you post a picture of the actual part that is broken and needs to be replaced? I'm pretty sure that it is the actual rod and not the mounting bracket that is damaged, but I could be wrong.

I’m assuming stress. The shipper tied it down with the stand extended. I’m assuming he hit a few bumps along the 2k mile journey that were too much for the stand. Amateur hour...

Like you, I had a clown shipper (Motorcycle Shippers...STI) strap my Multistrada to the pallet with the bike's side stand down. This has been know to crack the sump. I got very lucky. The stand mounting bolts worked loose, but I think the plywood pallet surface had just enough give to prevent a case fracture. Ducati owners manuals even go as far as to warn against putting your full weight on the bike with the side stand deployed.

Making it out of Aluminum was a bad idea; it flexes quite a bit. If I had it welded I'd put a sleeve over as much of the length as possible.

Perhaps the flex is a design feature rather than a problem. I would think an aluminium welder would be able to fix that. Take the opportunity to lengthen it an inch or more. And add a bigger foot.

I don't suppose there's any interest in having new legs made, given that the minimum order from the forge is 400...plus machining.
Still in the works is an improved sidestand bracket, which may or may not see the light of day for the same reason.

That's my next step if I can't find one in the near term. The only issue is there is a bend in the material. Hopefully a good welder/fabricator can address.
