Fuses that is...
What size fuse should I wire in to protect my Tom Tom ?

About doubble what it claims it uses on the back of the device, @12volts I'd be surprised if this is much over 2 amps.

Hardwired to your 12V system or plugged in with manufacturer's cord?
Most manufacturer's cords are fused.

Yes whatever the device says, probably not over an amp or two.  Remember tho that if the proper fuse blows the unit is probably toast anyway.  My experience has been that the fuse is there to protect the wiring and the rest of the system from going up in flames if the unit shorts out.  So by all means put a fuse of some sort in!

Most manufacturer's cords are fused.
Hardwired into 12V.
I took the power from the tail light wire..(yellow).

If you have the 550 there is a fuse already built into the docking station. No need to add another. (According to Page 12 of the on line owner's manual.)
