(NGC, well very little) - meeting my birth mother.
« on: December 08, 2019, 09:22:40 PM »
For better or worse this place is kind of like family so I am posting big to me personal news. I was adopted as an infant due to my birth mother being a pregnant 18 year old that was basically hustled by a married 24 year old Airman. I grew up in a good adoptive family, no complaints and never had given much thought to my birth parents.
Through the DNA testing at Ancestry.com totally out of the blue was connected with my birth mother about three weeks ago. Everything checks out so my wife and I are traveling to Albuquerque and will meet her on Tuesday. She just recently lost her husband of 63 years (not my father), my adoptive parents have passed and I am her only child so the timing is good. We have had four phone visits and some e-mail exchanges and all feels very positive. If all goes well I have a good excuse for future Guzzi (Guzzi content) motorcycle trips to a nice area. BTW, both her and her husband were riders.

I, sadly, never got to meet my birth mother, in fact I never even started to look for her until after my Mum died as I knew that if she knew I was looking she would be very hurt.

My parents never hid the fact I was adopted. In fact it had some benefits for them as when the inevitable "Where did I come from?" Question was asked they were able to say the went up and collected me from London! That was good enough for me! :D

After Mum died though Jude did some research and found out that my birth mother was actually Australian, (A nurse no less. And as we all know there are only two certainties in life. Death and Nurses!) and in all likelihood given where and when she was when she got pregnant my sperm donor father was almost certainly a US airman! Obviously they were a randy lot!

Further research showed that she had returned to Oz in 1958 and never married or had any more children. She died in Newcastle just north of Sydney six weeks after my Mum and I never got to meet her. While that does sadden me, (I know she kept in contact with my Mum for several years and was interested in my welfare.) if I had suddenly loomed out of her murky past I'm sure it would of been a shock. Maybe not a pleasant one.

It is strange though that after being bought up in blighty I eventually moved to Australia. The weirdest thing of all was when I walked through the doors ofKingsford Smith airport in Sydney on that bright spring morning in 1982 I had this extraordinary sensation of coming home. Weird.

I hope your meeting is one of joy and happiness John.

Good luck John.  My parents were teenagers.  I still have my mom, 16 years my elder.

John -

This is fantastic and it sounds like you have thought it through.

I can imagine it will be an amazing and emotional meeting.

I hope it will go such that it will be one of those "meant-to-be" life moments. Pictures would be awesome if you care to share them.

My wife returned yesterday from taking her Father up to Cleveland to attend the funeral of one of his cousins. As often happens at these gatherings the stories start to come out.

She discovered that her Father was one of 8 not 6, with a spread of 21 years. That she had relatives she'd not known about, common interests that re-occur. Talents that show up & become professions.

Not to say she enjoyed the funeral. But she did enjoy meeting all of these people that she has a bond with, both family & skills.

I'm sure meeting your new Mum will open the door to an aspect of your life that you weren't aware of. Enjoy it.

Cheers

Just got checked into a motel in Taos. Forgot how nice that last 50 miles from Trinidad to Taos is. Brought back memories from the national rally. Our Altima has the handling package and paddle shifters which is fun in the mountains.Still excited about tomorrow.

A time in your life that will bring you closure.

An opportunity that many adopted child will never get to enjoy.

Due to a large extended family of mine  with adopted children I know the joy of a complete  family unit.

Here we are together and pictures of the two airplanes her husband built flew. A Bede design and a RV6. He was a TWA mechanic back in the day starting with DC-3s and Connies.
They have also owned several Corvettes. Wonderful Day! She is a lovely women.
