Popeyes Chicken Sandwich.....
« on: December 19, 2019, 07:23:56 PM »
Well, I finally tried one.......

VERDICT: NOT WORTH GETTING SHOT OVER...

I tried the classic version. Nice size chicken breast, cooked well, great temperature (freshly cooked). Sandwich was larger than I expected. Breading was not as flavorful as Popeye's normal chicken (disappointment), and was too flaky, with pieces falling off everywhere. Bun was fine, not great, and not toasted. Had a pickle or two, and one side was slathered with Mayo (NOT good). Presentation and packaging was terrible. The bag was poorly folded, miss-marked (I ordered a spicy), and the wax paper around the sandwich looked like my 3 year old grandson wrapped it...... The Sandwich overall was under-seasoned, and meh/bland/forgettable. I still have to try the spicy version, but will get without their spicy mayo slather....

IMO, the Popeye's chicken sandwich could be improved with more seasoning, or even as a Deluxe, with Tomato, Onion and Lettuce, maybe a slice of cheese. There is just not enough flavor or goodness compared to ANY of CFA's offerings, but let's be honest, is MILES better than the offerings from the Freckled Faced Girl, Creepy King and Clown.

Would I eat it again? Sure, but wouldn't go out of my way and would be down the list if I wanted to go for a highly processed mass produced artery clogging fast food fat pill.🤓

A local variation here is the Del Rancho Chicken Fried Steak Sandwich Supreme.  I have an appetite for one every few years but I seldom care for breaded chicken parts on a bun.

BTW-you gotta have mayo on one of these.

I can't remember the last time I ate a deep fried anything sandwich. Looking at those pics makes me think about the case of diarrhea that would soon follow.

All fast food SUCKS!

The only fast food I would ever eat was "Arby's" roast beef sandwiches.   I was living in Atlanta when they opened the very first ones there, and I really liked a plain roast beef sandwich with the horseradish sauce.

But the Arby's here in Lynchburg ended up plagued with rats (the employees took photos and sent them to the paper because the manager wouldn't do anything about it) and they closed it down.

If I'm going to have rats and ptomaine poisoning from eating out somewhere, it's going to be "Mom and Pop" local rats and ptomaine poisoning .... no franchised cardboard food for me any more.

Besides the Oklahoma Chicken Fried Steak Sandwich there are also the Indiana Pork Fried Tenderloin Sandwich.  Again, I appreciate one perhaps once a year like maybe at the Indy 500.

I will admit that I am sucker for Oyster Po' Boys.  That is a fried sandwich I can do once a month.

As an electrical contractor I did work in many restaurants from fast food to high end joints...Many times what I saw was conditions you would never allow in your own home kitchen...Some were so filty from grease it's amazing they weren't shut down....
To me, a chicken sandwich has slices of chicken breast, not curled up pieces of deep fried chicken something...

Properly done, a fried oyster po boy is my absolute favorite fried anything sandwich. Bar none. No competition.  CFA once in a while as a treat.  We rarely do fast food and am more likely to make a CFA-type chicken sandwich at home from scratch.  Never had a Popeye chicken sandwich.  But given the choice between a proper oyster po boy and a proper muffulatta, life becomes complicated.

Kitchens, garages, machine shops, etc etc are as clean or dirty or professional or not as the people that run them...

I go there every chance I get.  The food is almost secondary to their level of service.  Always courteous, always polite.  The contrast between CFA and any other fast food joint you can think of is as different as night and day.

I haven't had a CFA chicken sandwich yet. Soon. They brine their chicken over night. Big difference in taste.

There is a local place close to us that does great fried chicken. They fry it in oil only - no breading. All skin fat is rendered. Good stuff.

CFA?  Is that Chick Fill A?  I had one once about 25 years ago.  That was enough.

I don't care for chicken that doesn't have bones in it.  In fact, what is chicken with no bones exactly?  Does anyone know what is in that?

I'm not worried about what's in a chicken sandwich, or even what's in a hamburger.   You can sort of tell that it's some sort of chicken bits and some sort of beef bits.

It's "chuckwagon steak" sandwiches that worry me.   I can't identify the consistency, color, or taste with any sort of known meat or vegetable product.

Of course, the fact that I eat scrapple regularly sort of takes the impact out of the concern, but I've actually MADE scrapple so I know what's in it.   I'll bet no one has made a "chuckwagon" steak at home ... !!!

It's definitely an immediate regret, but sometimes you gotta take the hit for the flavor.

I thought scrapple was a board game, but then googled it up and realized it's a board meal.

Wonder if I could grind up gizzards and pan fry them....gizzards have gristle so not good for a sandwich. They do have good flavor (Mary's Famous Chicken).

I have had scrapple just months ago! I like it ok. I also have been going to Popeye's since 1984 in Bradenton, Florida. About the only fast food place I go and now I do Popeye's once or twice a year. But never anything other than their original bone in chicken, spicy, prefer dark, red beans and rice. I remember clearly back in the 80s when they would do a 10 pc special for $3.99!

The beauty of Chic Fil A is their sandwich specifically is whole chicken breast, and never frozen. The chicken is pressure fried in peanut oil, and they are fanatics at keeping it clean. The Waffle Fries are cooked in other type of oil, I think Canola.

I worked in a CFA (mall Kiosk) in college back in the 80's, one of my buddies liked the people and company so much he stayed with them, is now a big mucky muck, and I also have 5-6 friends who run franchises. I met Mr Cathy and a couple of his kids over the years. Truly Great people and a great organization, pumping out great food.

Like In N Out Burger, they also have an insane 'secret menu'  The Spicy Grilled Chicken Sandwich is killer....  Sadly, my closest is 30 minutes away.......... Probably a good thing for the old waistline.

Lannis, You can keep your Scrapple..........   :shocked:

HAHAHA.. True Story, I had never heard of Okra, had seen it in some Asian food over the years (not really knowing what it was), but when I was in Springfield Missouri circa 2000, we went to this awesome local restaurant where they throw rolls at you, "Lamberts Cafe" As my wife and 3 kids and I sit down, a waitress comes by, rips a piece of brown paper towel and places it in front of us. Right behind her was another with a big metal bowl and spoons out some bite sized fried things..... "What is it?" we ask. Fraaaahhd Okrahhhh is the answer.... Umm, what that? lol, we got an earful, but loved it.... Was also introduced to "Chicken Fried Steak".............

It also took 8X and an assist from an elderly gent in the next table to understand 'swayt tay or unswayt tay' Thats when I found out the difference between a Yankee and a Damn Yankee.... We were welcomed with a smile and handshake as we were only there temporarily ;-) I still have nightmares of my time in Missouri..... Especially the meth lab that blew up 2 houses down and the house of midgets that lived across the street....... and oh well, you get the idea ;-)

It was quite a cultural adventure for a bunch of Yankees.........

But Scrapple is just bad........ I've had fresh and homemade, and can be tolerable, but most places is just nasty.... I'm more of a Taylor Pork Roll kinda guy..... In NY they slice it like ham or spiced ham and call it Taylor Ham..... Almost as good as Mortadella......... ..

I had to Google it to see what scrapple is.

Ok, if I ever came to the States (which won't ever happen) I would be game to give it a shot.

My Dutch father-in-law when he was alive used to make his own brawn from a pigs head.  It was absolutely delicious. :food: :thumb:

Never tried scrapple whatever it is. We were bought up on a farm and dad used to kill a sheep once in while.

Mum made some nice tasting fritters we all enjoyed, until she told us they were made from sheep brains.

The Pennsylvania Dutch made what they called Ponhaas (pan rabbit) which was pork offal that was boiled and then corn meal, flour and spices were added and cooked more then put into bread pans and allowed to cool.
Before serving it is sliced and fried.
Dwight Eisenhower was a fan of Ponhaas.
My great uncle Albert owned the Broadway Market in Abilene, KS and Ike was one of his best customers because the Ponhaas was so good.

EDIT
Hutchinson was incorrect. It was Abilene. Dad grew up for a while in Hutch before going to Boys Town.
