Sometimes fun to just fantasize, sometimes fun to get out the pencil and figure out what you could do if you just liquidated all your toys you have now and bought ONE fascinating, rare item, and drove/rode it like a real vehicle, keeping it in good shape as you went but not treating it like a china-doll investment ....

I watched an hour or so on TV, flipping back and forth with a Mecum auction from the day prior. My wife said we should go those look fun, and I heartily agreed.

That has been in the back of my mind for a couple years now, I could see selling off all my bikes if it came to a point I could not safely ride them and getting some older car to lavish attention on. One of those South African made GT40 replicas would scratch an itch I have had since I was a teenager and got a soft cover FORD book put out by Peterson on the GT40.

A Porsche Spyder replica is pretty affordable, especially in the used market but I'd want one with a Subaru engine.

This belongs to my Triumph-Indian riding buddy Dwight.

It is a "BECK" replica, (made in SOCAL in the early 90's), with a hig-performance VW engine and Weber carbs, which never stay in tune too long! :thumb:

I have driven this car and it is a BLAST!  Scary though, when coming along side of huge SUV's and pick-ups! with oversize tires!

Beck makes some nice replica's, how did the Spyder handle in the turns?

I believe his weighs less than 2000 pounds...so it handled like a slot-car.  Light and nimble, and again, you are sooooooo close to the ground.  70 mph feels like 100+! :thumb:   Lots of fun to drive up here in northern AZ.  NOT a highway car, however...

Great pictures.  I am at an age where "want/must" have  no longer comes into the equation regarding vintage car iron.  Still enjoy looking, but
no desire to purchase.  Getting down to 3 motorcycles in the spring, and possibly down to two.  Empty garage space is more desirable than filling
it with something.

Huh? VW flat 4 cylinder I'm assuming, so how does it have six Weber carbs? My bro's flat 6 911 had two triple-choke Webers.

I'm kind of partial to the Superbird but I would have to sell everything I own to raise the cash but I would still be short. I remember that they couldn't give them away when they were new.

I have a riding buddy who has a Jeepster. It is bright red with a white top and interior. Powered by a 289 Ford V8. He takes it to car shows pulling his VL Harley on a trailer.

John, I noticed in your first album that you had several photos of a Pagani Huayra.   I always wondered why these seem to draw far more attention than other supercars.  Then I read this in Road and Track from an interview with Horacio Pagani the CEO of Pagani Automobilia:

' Each bolt on the Huayra is milled from titanium and laser engraved with the Pagani crest, each car carrying around
                    $140,000 in fasteners alone.

It's interesting when you put up a big photo display (thanks!) of cars and trucks that I scan and see what catches my eye.

I've been interested in vehicles (much like guys were interested in horses in the old days, and for the same reasons) for 50 years now, since I was "camped" on the courthouse steps waiting to get in to get my Learner's permit.

And I find that my eye just skims completely over hot-rods, modifieds, "replicars", bigfoot trucks, and over-restored pieces of butt jewelry, regardless of how much money, craftsmanship, metalwork, etc etc has gone into them.   That's someone else's dream and the chances that their dream will intersect with MY dream at any point are slim to none.   It's like seeing another guy's wife that he's madly in love with but isn't attractive to me at all.   And I know it goes the other way, but that's fine.

Real cars, trucks, and bikes, mostly old but occasionally new, are what I stop and dwell on and think about.   That 23-window VW bus, now ... I could hit the road with that and live for months just seeing the world if I couldn't do it on a bike.

There's still time!

Thanks for posting this, I have never been to the Russo and Steel or Bonhams auctions, they look to be much more sedate than B-J.
I once went to a B-J auction 7 years ago and was put off by the hype and glitz, guys wearing too much jewelry and trophy wives hanging onto them with way too much jewelry, not a Guzzi kind of crowd.
