1st gen (2V) vs 2nd gen (4V) Norge
« on: March 03, 2020, 05:32:35 AM »
I've owned two 2V Norges over the past 10 years; have put 80K miles on them. The first was a 2009; totaled on a deer. The second, a 2007, is still my main rider. I'm considering the purchase of a 2014 Norge, and had some questions for the wise folks on this forum:

In what ways is the 2nd gen bike superior to its earlier version?

Are there ways in which the 2V Norge is actually preferable to the 4V bike?

Though I have loved my Norges, they have had some issues. Will I likely have to deal with these same problems with the 4V Norge?
     startus interruptus
side stand and center stand vibrated loose
     warped front brake rotor
broken cat in muffler blocked exhaust flow (2009)
had to lube swingarm pivots (2009), have yet to do it to the 2007

Are these parts interchangeable?
     seat
     throttlemeister

Thanks for the information,

Jon

I have a 4V but have not owned a 2V.
My understanding the stock suspension was improved on the 4V. I have no complaints, works well for me.
The dash is repositioned some.
Think the handle bars where changes somewhat for easier reach.
I think there were some changes made to make it easier to remove and replace body work without breaking things.
I consider the motor to be just wonderful.
The computer is about 20% optomistic on it's avg. milage readout.
Yes, my center stand and side stand have come loose.
Both oil lines to the heads loosed at the head end and leaked. Retighten and okay since.
For lack of a better term the muffler cap kept coming loose until I used Loc-Tite.
The muffler shell tack welds broke, riveted it together instead.
This all got sorted by about 12,000 miles and no problems since.
Love the bike overall except for riding in crosswinds, not due to handling but wind noise and dope slapping my helmet.

There’s no doubt that from 5,000 rpm upwards the 8V is much stronger. Below that there is no discernible difference that’s of consequence and I dare suggest that the 8V does not have the velvety/liquid feel in it’s power output, but I’ve only ridden an 8V on two short occasions.
I really felt that Wyno’s Griso was one tooth shorter on first gear in that the clutch was out slightly sooner on take off but I’m told that’s not true, easy to check though.
The bits that matter here in Oz are as follows..
If you exceed the limit by 20 k’s or more, you WILL lose your licence so the 8V is superior if you want to do a bit more walking..
They drink like a sailor on leave..
A subjective view, but I don’t think the 8V is as attractive..( love IS blind..)

On paper the 8V is a better bike, but I don’t ride on paper... :bike-037:
I’ll bump an old thread...

You can lose your license for exceeding the speed limit by 20KPH???   That's only 12.4mph, that's crazy!

^^^^^ I've seen lots of smoking deals on mint 4 & 8 valve Norges go by, some piqued my curiosity, but the only one that  broke my heart to let slip through my fingers was a fully faired and loaded 2V in red.

I had a long distance deal lined up on a gorgeous Red 2V Norge, I needed a lot of trust in the seller, and that dissolved over a few conversations, so I didn't go for the deal.

Even with the lack of easy oil dipstick access, possible oil pump failure being a live issue and some type of bodgy fairing/lowers/frame bracket repair done by the owner; I still found that model of Norge in the faster color, an extremely sexy looking bike.

I don't think anyone answered your question about the seats. Yes, they are interchangeable. I have an 09 2v. I think a 7 year newer bike could have many advantages as the little bits everywhere are just newer. My understanding as has already been pointed out they are a little more thirsty. I do think there was upgrades to the suspension and drivers position in relation to grip height/reach.

You cant go wrong with either.  Of course if going with a 4V make sure that it was "rollerized" from the factory, or that  rollerization was performed early in it's life if it was born a flat tappet motor.

I can attest that a properly sorted 4V (rollered) with a Beetle map and a careful Roper tune is pure bliss on wheels.  The engine is transformed into a smooth, powerful turbine!

For our general benefit..
Could we stick to 2V 8V terminology ?
It all gets messy.

     seat

Thanks for the information,

Not sure about superior, but as others have said, the 2nd Gen with 8V has more power a the upper revs.  Biggest improvement was in the stock suspension, the Saddlebags have better sealing, bodywork gives better protection, grips a bit closer to the rider, and improvements to the windscreen.

I removed the Cat to good effect, but required several adjustments to the map (thank you Beetle)
Same issue with swingarm greasing
No issues (for me) on Starter Interuptus
Throttlemeister should carry over
Not sure on seat, but my guess would be yes. They changed the padded section, but pan looked the same

I prefer the 4V motor over the 8V. Never loved the Norge 8V motor. I also found the seat position too tight for knees, even with lowered pegs. Still, part of me misses the Norge. Such a sweet bike.
