Machine Shop Eastern Virginia
« on: March 03, 2020, 07:32:22 AM »
Does anyone know of a good quality Machine Shop in the eastern Virginia area or within a day or so drive that has experience with vintage motorcycle engines.  Years ago there used to be at least two in everytown, now not so much.  Looks like I will doing the work on my latest Honda twin project and will need valves and boring work done probably at a minimum.  It has been a long time since I did a top end job, so I am heading to the Drug Store for some 375 reading glasses, pulling out all my old manuals, and doing my best to not start drinking again.  Thanks in advance for any recommendations....

You may want to ping David Carmean/Moto Europa in Mechanicsville...ro ck solid on BMWs and vintage Ducatis.   drcarmean@gmail.com

I don't think David does a ton of machining but can likely direct you to local resources.

What machining skills/knowlegge are you looking for specifically?  Lynchburg, VA is full of excellent machine shops.

Are you looking for engine builders?  There are even couple of famous NASCAR engine builders here, whose names escape me at the moment.

I don't understand the need for expertise.  Those Hondas are indestructible!

forgot to add...pretty sure Bore-Tech is closed permanently due Bills age/health.  Took place a few years ago.  I think his family was keeping the website lights on to sell some old stock items still on the shelves.

Thanks for the Bore tech update. Damn shame,we are loosing so many vintage industry people. It sucks. My friend just went through this. His 650 Tri needs boring and the local long time(20 yr. metric) bike shop said no problem to do his cyls. EG said forget it, guy would not bore clearance and grit hone to old iron cyl. specs. Grabbed his stuff and said see ya!!!

I know Randy's Cycle specializes in a lot of the old Japanese bikes.  Might be worth a shot.   I think he's south of Orange...north of Lake Anna.  Still plenty active--saw some nicely done full restorations of his at British, European (and now Japanese) Day in Maryland last year.

I think I am off the hook with maybe enough mad money left over for a couple dozen worms when fishing season opens, and I mean that literally.  I spent quite a while on the phone this evening with an gentlemen in Pennsylvania who has done hundreds of the 305 engines, his speciality.  When you drop a motor off it will be probably around two months before you see it again but it returns with all aluminum polished, cases painted in authentic Honda Silver Cloud paint, new pistons, rings, valves, seals, transmission gone through, and ready to install and kick over with a guarantee.  He also states he will take what is good cosmetically and mechanically out of both of my motors and give me back the numbers matching case to the frame.  He is the engine builder for Classic Honda Restoration and looking at some of the motors he has done, what a thing of beauty.  I can't stand to type the cost, it just hurts too much, but as the saying goes, "you get what you pay for."  I have not fully committed yet, I am going to sleep on it, but looks like a Pennsylvania trip may be coming up shortly....
