T3 - 120 rear tire?
« on: March 03, 2020, 10:31:01 PM »
The standard T3 rear tire size is a 110x90. Will a 120 fit or is it a tight squeeze getting it past the final drive?

I got one to fit on my 84 Cal II ,no problems with clearance, so I think it will fit your T-3 no problem. After all, they are both Tontis.

Does the tire manufacturer have a rim size suggestion , just because they can be mounted doesn't guaranty it's best handling properties .
But 110/90 rear tires aren't stocked all that much anymore . Was the original rim a WM 2.5 ? Peter

I have a 120/90 Pirelli sport demo on the cast g5 rims and they fit. Good clearance, tire didn't deform from what I can tell, handles well. I like it. I have 110/90 on the front.

Thanks guys. Guess I should explain why I ask. I'm converting a LM4 to a 1000S. The T3 rear fender mounted up easily after straightening the frame rails, but the wheel sits farther back due to the longer LM swingarm. I don't like the way it looks so am considering installing a shorter swingarm. I'm running a 2.5 Akront on the rear with a 120x90 which was the stock size for the 1000S - down from the 130x80 the LM4 came with.

If I go that route, I'll have to also get shorter shocks, but it's all do-able. The only real question was whether the tire would fit, which it sounds like it will.

Is the rim you are using 2.5? Then you may be cutting it close, but I "think" it would still clear. The cast G5 rims are 2.15 which do squeeze the tire a bit overall. As far as clearing when mounting, I think I found it best to go from under as that bit of width did make it harder to clear. Just raise the bike higher, easy enough.

If going for a 1000S replica, I'd try to stick with the mid-length swingarm. It's fatter, and will be correct. What's the difference between the 1000S and T3 fender? Is the 1000S just more stretched out, or is it mounted differently?

If you are starting from a Le Mans IV, as it has from stock a 16"frt wheel specific triple clamp offset - are you changing that triple tree to one suited to an 18"frt wheel?

Groover - I didn't know anything for the 1000S was available! But at that price I'll stick with the T3 fender.

Cdn - I've installed a late 90s Cali front end with a 2.15 front rim. So, yes, it's got the triples with more offset than the LM4.

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe the 1000S has the same (45mm) offset as the later Le Mans, which included on overlap with the 16". However, the fork spacing may be 195mm instead of 180mm. Hopefully someone else can confirm all that.

Groover - I don't know what offset the 1000S triples have. I suspect it's the same as the LM4, though the top clamp is different - a whole different casting. Or perhaps it's machined from billet. The reduced offset makes for more sluggish steering requiring a little more effort, but works fine.

The LeMans has 180mm fork tube spacing, and I suspect the 1000S with the cast wheels was the same. The wire wheels require 195mmsince they're a bit wider.

Here's a photo from last October - but it's pretty much the same today with the strapped-on T3 seat. I'm in the process of making a seat pan and side cover molds.

I know the CX is a different machine but when going to a 120 tire on the rear it required moving the wiring along the inside of the fender for the tail lights(and turn signals).
In the original position the tire would rub the harness during a good bump or loaded w/passenger.

Just saying...

That fender doesn't look too bad actually. Seems the 1000S doesn't have the side/mount flashing part, and the mount system is more of a horseshoe shaped bracket which maybe allows it to tilt or go back a half-ish inch. The bike is shaping up nicely, looks like you have the right brackets on the front fender. Which fork lowers are those?

Yeah, the wires to the tail light are really close and I'm afraid they'll be rubbed on a bad bump. I've thought of re-arranging the mount on the front side so the whole fender tilts - like maybe add a spacer. I'm guessing 1/2" would be enough.

Groover - I don't follow you on the side flasher stuff. Could you explain? I'm sort of thinking you're talking about the turn indicators that are mounted to the frame on the 1000S - something I'll probably wind up doing eventually since it would be cleaner and reduce the number of wires going all the way back.

Ah - the front fender. The front end came complete from an 87 Cali - sliders, everything. Went to sleep for months trying to decide how to mount a fender. Didn't want to use the original LM sliders since they're set up for the 270mm discs and I wanted the 300mm. Finally I fabbed some stainless brackets that span the upper caliper mount up to the original fender mount. The fender mounting brackets mount to that bracket. I'm not sure what tubular Guzzi brackets those are that I used. I thought they were from the rear of a T3, but they're a little different. I'm pretty sure they're the exact same mounts as used on the 1000S, but not exclusive to that model.

My suggestion is to trim the fat off the T3 fender, then use an inverted U bracket.

That part number is GU144391701. The photos is from Stein Dinse but they don't have it.

That's an idea I hadn't thought of. Rather than 'cutting off the fat' I could make a little extension bracket. What I don't like about that idea is the fender would sit higher than it already is, which would affect the seat. At some point I'll have to remove the shocks and move the wheel up full travel checking for interference. Just looking at it I'd guess it would hit - but it hasn't so far.
