Boredom Combat

For unmentionable reasons, the San Francisco Bay Area is in social lockdown.  Most everything is closed and empty.  Fortunately,  hardware stores are open for essential purposes.

While wrenching today I was listening to NPR radio.  The guest was a film critic.  He was asked what films people should download or stream to beat the boredom stress.
His first selection was Buster Keaton's "The General".  That should get the Civil War buffs going pretty good.
I neglected to listen to his second choice as I was cursing loudly at a stuck bolt (didn't help).
His third selection was "Harold and Maude".  TADA!  A famous Guzzi movie.  The Cat Stevens soundtrack is sublime.  The police chase scenes take place just nearby in my  home town.  Most of the chase was by Guzzi Loopframe (the chase was started by Kawasaki but they crashed that one).   You might remember Bruce Baille who rode an old Eldorado from Canada to Bolivia and back.  Spoiler alert!  When he was here I took him  to the location where Maude steals the Guzzi.

I have not seen Harold and Maude since my Guzzi Enlightenment, so I will have to check it out.

Does Dumb and Dumber qualify as a motorcycle flic?
 They ride a mini bike 2-up to Aspen.

If I was in San Francisco, I might take take a spin up to Tamales Bay, but probably too wet up that way. Maybe shoot through the Caldecott Tunnel and make a run up the river where its warmer and have a bracer in that rough little river rat marina pub, if its still there.

its an odd thing this social isolation thing. its early days yet but i honestly don't mind it so far.  i can keep myself entertained and because i am old the penalty for violating the edict could be a slow and miserable death. so, i am content with it...at least for now..as i said its early days.

i finished reading adam savage's newest book "every tool's a hammer" and can report that its a great breezy read.  today i spent the day working on the computer making some boxes on Makercase for the laser cutter.  the day before i spent an entire day sharpening the good kitchen knives and the box of small knives..leatherman, swiss army, spyderco and all the rest. there is always something to do.

in french you can't really say "i am bored" the way it is structured you say "i bore myself." well that about sums it up. if you have gotten into your later years and you can't figure out how to entertain yourself then you've done it all wrong....for a very long time.

i know patrick a bit and i know he has diverse interests and talents. he doesn't seem like the kind of guy to get bored.

the next book (just started it) is by anne karpf and its entitled "the human voice." its all about that.

Harold and Maude has been one on my all-time favorite movies and I can't say that her driving that el Camino didn't influence me buying one 20 years ago.

Garage projects are my boredom therapy. Presently have my boat engine (350 Chevy) on a stand. Ingested some coolant in one cylinder bank last September due to a failed water jacket on one exhaust manifold. Ordered a gasket, rings, and bearing shell kit today. Hours o' entertainment value there! Nothing to do on the bikes, they're just waiting for some good riding weather.

This is a good time to touch base with older folks you my know and just check on them.
Call a friend or family member you haven’t talked to in a while
Do a home project that you have been putting off, remember hardware stores are open.
Do your own maintenance on your bike, change out those tires yourself.

There are endless things one can do at home for weeks if necessary and remember, nothing stays the same forever 👍

Interesting!  They used to play Harold & Maude often at the Varsity theater in downtown Palo Alto in the 70's and 80's, often before or after the Rocky Horror Picture show.  I remember seeing this movie a couple of times as a teenager, found it quite odd.   The old lady just creeped me out back then...maybe she'd be amusing now!

He was jumped, robbed and beaten in either Guatemala or Costa Rica before shipping back to Florida.  He flew to Florida to await the bike.  It was delayed.  He slept on the airport lawn and ended up being tased by the local police.  He eventually made it back here to the west coast and home to Canada.  I heard from him just a few months ago.  He was in the process of buying a Tonti Cali here in the Bay Area and needed local help.  Sure for me.  In the end, the bike was shipped and I didn't need to meet him again.  Sounded in good health and spirits, but communication was only through keyboard.
