Tonti Swing Arm Bolt Thread Pitch
« on: March 24, 2020, 07:06:20 PM »
Does anyone know the tap size for the tonti swing arm frame holes?  I need to clean out some paint.  Thanks and best wishes to all.  Ben

Measure the pins... OD of threads and what fraction of a mm between peaks... e.g. 1.25mm... so it might read M13 1.25   ???? Others?

+1 measured on my EV.  IIRC, it is the very same on the old LoopFrames as well.

I believe that someone in the LoopFrame community had purchased said tap and it was circulating by mail in the community.  I'll ask.  But, maybe someone on this forum has one for periodic minor loan.

BTW,  I have occasionally run into frames which are a real bummer to start the pins.  If so, take the swingarm out of the way, reach inside, and thread the pivot pin backwards from the inside.  Turn it all the way through to clean up any minor imperfections.  Major thread damage has to be done by a tap.  But, also think about running the tap from the inside to out.

Alas, I looked on Greg Bender's LoopFrame site and I see he reports the LoopFrame pivot pins as 20 X 1.  So, no joy there.

I believe it's different, early Tonti (same as Loop - 20 x 1) and late. I have two 20 x 1 taps and can loan one out if needed.

I've also had good results using a wire wheel in my Dremel to remove errant powder and paint.

I didn’t think of using a wire wheel. Thanks.

I use a sharp scriber to remove debris, then a squirt of brake cleaner.

You can also use a (long) smaller diameter fastener with the same thread pitch and if halved (semi circle) it then becomes a thread scraper at the flat side.

A few years back I purchased a tap from Germany, seemed like a reasonable investment if you have a tonti fetish

Perfect moment to order a cheap aliexpres tap.
Even then , guzzi used to sell oversize pivot bolts, for thread repairs.
so dont be amazed if your brand new tap does not fit.

Good tip.  Also a smaller tap with the same pitch can be used as a thread scraper
