can someone given me the diameter of loop rear shock mounts?
« on: March 26, 2020, 05:09:04 PM »
the bike I just picked up ('73 eldorado) has lower rear shocks from something, I have no idea what.  both the upper and lower mounts look small to me.  I tried mounting the shocks from my g5 just to see and the shock eye was way to big for what's on the bike
thx

I believe they’ve been turned down to 13mm, the g5 is 14mm. mgcycle  list them as one and the same. Guess I’m in the hunt for 4

Early ones (V700) are ~ 12 mm, after that they were ~ 14 mm.

crap, just as I figured.  anyone want to part with 4, 14mm ones?  I could order bushings but id have to then turn these down to 12mm from 13mm, which I don't have the ability to do. mcmaster has 12mm id 14mm od bronze bushings

MG Cycle sells new ones: http://www.mgcycle.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=197_200&products_id=3298

I'm sure that Mark @ Moto Guzzi Classics has more than a few. I might have some, but would have to dig in my stash to see.

I have purchased the bushings only from Progresive before, might try them.

A couple pieces of 2" angle, drill bit and you can hardtail it. After you encounter the 1st bump the $80 for the shock bolts will seem more reasonable.

Maybe try some copper tubing to make your bushing. Cheap fleabay shocks come with nylon adapters. If you can't find a tube of some sort, maybe cut up a soda can and wrap it around the mount until it's the right size.

tom, you read my mind,  copper tubing worked great.  now to pull everything apart, pull the motor and try to get those 2 snapped (below the surface) alternator bracket bolts out. ARGH

I had one snap. Thought it was going to be a pain. Ended up coming out fairly easily once I drilled most of it away.

Good luck,

going to build a little dam with something, plumbers putty?, and make a pool of 50/50 atf and acetone and let it sit a few days.  maybe a little heat with a propane torch first?

You mean the studs that held the generator mount, some times a L/H drill will be enough after soaking as you mention.
A Torx into a drilled hole can work also as long as the remaining fastener body is not expanded to much tapping it in and the there is not corrosion or locking agent.

The threads on mine were 80% fine but installed 2.5 D (20 mm) Helicoils and custom studs (over bolts) anyway.
(The stock threads were not tapped to the bottom of the hole so no wonder the stock bolts can loosen and flog the threads, snapped off is something else)
Good luck.
