Solo riding in southwestern Missouri
« on: March 30, 2020, 03:21:36 PM »
I am on job in Springfield, MO installing a bunch of equipment for a company that will be making race car parts for the big guys.
About $2 million spent on our company's heat treating equipment. Luckily just a few people working here right now so I can easily social distance.
Glad I got a hotel room with a full kitchen so makes eating safer. I was avoiding daily room cleaning but found out yesterday they laid off the entire cleaning crew. At a Marriott!
I am one who enjoys a pub which is now an isolated picnic table at a small state park on Lake Springfield.
Yesterday was nice so I had a good 200 mile ride. Mostly small roads and a bit of US 160. MO 125 was pretty cool. I thought I got in over my head on a couple of dirt roads that I had to ride through some running water. The pic has one of the easiest crossings.
It was weird to see a few churches still packed with people in the more rural areas. Saw a bunch with drive through services.

125 is a nice ride, take it south and you'll get on the Peel Ferry across Bull Shoals Lake.  Keep going south and you can take hwy 7 to Jasper Ark.  There are no bad roads from there.

John -

Nice! Thanks for the pics and glad you are able to get out.

I rode Thursday for a short toot to the Ace Hardware to pick up some steel rod I needed for a project. No issues.

Since it looks like the noose is getting tighter and tighter - if we are out and get stopped, what are the consequences unless we can prove our meanderings are essential, like getting groceries or drugs?

Any know how to interpret the situation? And sorry if this has already been answered elsewhere, please feel free to respond with a link to that thread...

Red Bridge road was the one that got a little rough for an old Guzzi. H to 160 was nice. Yeah, I have done rt 7 in Arkansas many a time. Very nice.

Now that I have a wad of cash to buy the 1000SP in Nashville, thanks to someone on this forum, I am poised to drive all the way across MO and some of Tennessee to get it. Even though I could get away with it and unsure of the actual legality, I suppose common sense and good citizenship says stay home. I'd sure like to just jump in the truck and go, limiting contact all the way. Should I or shouldn't I?

I can relate but if it was me I would give it a month. By that time one should have more solid information to make the decision to go or no go. At least you are sure you want to do the deal so the seller should be cool with holding the bike for you. As far as doing solo day trips just to get out and ride I think that this would fall under mental health and well being needs. No over night or stops for other than gas and you are not endangering anyone. Not every one owns a motorcycle but those of us who do should be able to safely use them to keep sane in a very bad situation.

Looks like he is OK, and practicing better social distancing than those going to the stores.

I didn't mean to make this thread drift into a virus discussion, so I'll make it drift another direction a little to the South.

If it ever stops raining I think I'll make a 2-wheel jaunt down to Eureka Springs to see if the sidewalks are rolled up.

It looks like I had better just wait on the Tennessee run and hope the 1000SP is still available in few weeks. Like ratguzzi says, there are going to be some mad deals emerging with the economics.

Maybe a "well sorted" CONVERT bargain will pop up for me instead. Especially if someone wanted to trade for sporting items. :wink:

We have one too, until June, but if you read the fine print, you can still do almost anything you want as long as you don't gather people in the same place.

"Outdoor Recreational Activities", as long as you don't get 10 people in the same small space, is specifically on the OK list.

And like Cam said, no cop who is having to watch violent felons get released after they bring them in is going to bother some gray-headed geezer on a Guzzi!

So get out there and ride.   You're only breathing into your own helmet - great for the rest of the country!

Ron,

I am sure it varies state by state and locality by locality.  In Maryland the consequence is $5000 fine or jail time if ticketed as of 8:00PM last night.  Delaware is pulling over any car with out of state plates near beach resort areas and ticketing or sending them back to their home state.

The "noose is tightening" as you say primarily because people don't understand what stay at home means.  FYI, it means stay home.  Do not travel.  Do not go out for "mental health"rides on your motorcycle.  If there is a feeling that your liberties are being infringed it is because they are, and this is happening because we continue to see people out and about being selfish without regard to the fact that they are helping to spread an illness.

Myself and a few friends had established a Sunday ride habit over the last several weeks, and decided to take a chance on this past Sunday as well. We changed the rules however, striving to honor the CDC and it's requests.

Out was the meal, before (brunch in a buddies kitchen) and after (burgers or similar 3-4 hours later)

We planned a landing spot for post ride, all contact was outdoors in park like settings, distant from one another, voices raised, and brief. Enabled us to see each others faces, talk in realtime with human voices, no phones or keyboards, about what we're experiencing, how we're doing, all the things that are being attended to that normally aren't and the things we aren't doing. knocked out 150 miles.

It occurred to me that any group of bikes would HAVE to be viewed by law enforcement as a social outing, and we may be stopped (there were 6 of us). Bear in mind, Indiana is a week into a shelter in place proclamation. During a portion of the ride while I was leading, sure enough we had a state trooper as a sag wagon. We didn't curtail our behavior in any way and after a mile or two, he went on along his way. It occurs to me he felt he sent the intended message, without having to go further. Or he was a friend of Chucks who saw a Guzzi and thought I may want my picture taken....

In the end the outing definitely served it's purpose. We got some air, got to talk to brothers, and it was good.

If you are allowed to go shopping, YOU ARE NOT STAYING AT HOME.  If you are allowed to go through drive through restaurants, YOU ARE NOT STAYING AT HOME.  If you are going to the dentist, doctor, etc. for just routine cleanings / visits, YOU ARE NOT STAYING AT HOME.  Please carefully read the restrictions imposed by your state / community.

Are the restrictions in Maryland across the entire state, or in the cities?  Every time I have looked up restrictions they are different than what many imply or hear from their local news.

If you feel better and safer staying at home, then by all means stay at home.  As for me, I will obey laws, and the intent of the guidance.  I have not come within 30 feet of another individual in 2 weeks, but am enjoying riding when I can.

I have attached a snippet of the official document that you can download from the governor's website.  Sure is a lot of leeway in this order.

Dusty, everyone has their own way of dealing with this crisis.  Staying home, but going to the stores is worse than staying home, but going for a solo motorcycle ride.

The point of all this is social separation.  If you feel more comfortable staying home, then stay home.  If you feel more comfortable taking a solo ride on your motorcycle as a way of coping with this, then so be it.

Misinformation is a real problem.  Everyone should get as educated as they can on this virus because going to the grocery store can kill you as can getting take out food.  Too many people that are shopping are not taking this seriously.

So everyone, my suggestion is to socially isolate, and if that means staying at home, then do so.

Dusty is right.

Big picture is the more people who stay home the better, period.

The more people go out for any reason increases the risk of exposure/spread.

Dusty is right.

Big picture is the more people who stay home the better, period.

All we want to do is to let folks know what the law requires/suggests that they do.   The law does not just say

STAY AT HOME!

in Virginia.

In Virginia, executive order 55 from yesterday says that here are a list of things that you MAY do under the law:

Travel for purpose of obtaining food, beverages, goods, or services as permitted in Executive
Order 53;

b. Seeking medical attention, essential social services, governmental services, assistance from law enforcement, or emergency services;
c. Taking care of other individuals, animals, or visiting the home of a family member;
d. Traveling required by court order or to facilitate child custody, visitation, or child care;
e. Engaging in outdoor activity, including exercise, provided individuals comply with social distancing requirements;
f. Traveling to and from one’s residence, place of worship, or work;g. Traveling to and from an educational institution;
h. Volunteering with organizations that provide charitable or social services;
and

i. Leaving one’s residence due to a reasonable fear for health or safety.

It seem to me that it's not right, on just your opinion, to add to the list of restrictions.   How do YOU know that that's not going to do more harm that good?     In the big picture, it may or may not be true that everyone is better served by staying in their house from fear; which is why there's a list of specific exemptions.

This isn't politics; it's just making clear what the law actually is.   This is not misinformation.

Ratguzzi-I didn't catch where you were staying. If you go back out and about, check out Rte. 90 in SW Missouri.  It goes generally east-west from Washburn to Noel. Only about 40-50 miles but looks like a good road to run. Out in the country for the practice of physical distancing.
