A HUGE sissy bar for my Eldorado.
« on: April 21, 2020, 12:28:16 PM »
Hello Folks, A good friend gave me a humongous sissy bar he had hanging in his garage. He tells me he has alot of memories of using that on his loops when he went 2 up camping in the Arizona mountains with his wife. She loved it as a backrest, and he would hang a big pack on the back, with his gear.
with all this "downtime" on my hands thoughts inevitably turn to " what should I do with the sissy bar? Its in excellent shape, including the pad, and a survivor from the 70s. I kinda like it in a " funky 70's way"....I have thought should I cut it down/modify it, mount it as is, mount it without the pad,  use it as wall art,etc...
My question to the group, is what should I do with it? Will it look too weird with a solo seat? I do have the stock  2 up seat I can switch to. I thought I could change the look of the bike back and forth, I dunno. FWIW,the bar in the pics is not properly mounted, just held on with an elastic, so it would sit lower and less angled back when bolted down. Does anyone know who made these for the loops, back in the 70's , I am guessing Dan Brown, or DB?
Has the cheese slipped completely off my cracker....What do you all think/suggest?
Thanks
Rick.

You be stylin'

I think I still have one that's probably 3/4ths that tall out in the shed or down in the basement. I might have given it away or lost it in the '93 flood. I had it on a '72 Water Buffalo. Girly friend at the time liked it and I did fasten a full size backpack to it for camping and trips. Actually worked well for that.

I'd say wall art unless you ever have a use for it. I've had pillions that would have really dug it.

Well, I originally entertained the thought of mounting it up for a month or two, with the long seat just for fun, but after contemplating, and digesting the groups suggestions , wall art gets the nod! Maybe displayed hanging next to an "Easyrider" poster. Ive had a couple friends tell me it has an easyrider vibe to it.

    Yup

Your Eldo looks gorgeous, but that sissy bar reminds me of something I added to the back of my banana seat ape hanger bicycle when I was 9 or 10 yrs old, I don't think I looked as cool as I thought I did,  :afro: lol.

You could definitely pack a lot of camping gear tied on to that sucker, I like the discrete tie down hooks/handles on the sides and top, you hardly notice them

I agree with the other opinions expressed, I do have one concern though, are your walls easily offended?

Rick,
Your loop is looking great!  Those seat backs can be customized with a saw and a little welding at a muffler shop..... sounds like what happened to a Ken Hand relic that "happened" to enter my garage!

Well, the sissy bar style doesn't have very much in common with your Eldo, prob it would look nice on a chopper based on a Guzzi engine, but like that... just say thanks, and hang it like wall art in your garage...  :azn:

Hey  Guys, and Gals, Thank you all for the kind words, and the humor. During these  trying  times, a good chuckle definitely "hits the spot!"  I am going to find the perfect spot on the wall for it.

Here is an idea that came to mind... make a nice wooden or plexiglass "shelf" that mounts to the sissy bar,and hangs on the wall, in order to display an eldo scale model I built years ago, to try and match my bike. My wife, asking  "Where do you plan to hang that up?"Has  already relegated it to "mancave art!" :thewife:

All you need now are extended forks!

I say...those 70s chopper seats and sissy bars used to be collectible

I could see a wall of them on display would be pretty cool
