Passing the time during lockdown
« on: April 25, 2020, 12:23:04 PM »
Considering this as the lockdown continues, and I can't ride until late June. Any Bagpipers on WG?

I'm back to work (telework) and have completed a refresh on the Convert, did a full service on the Stornello including swapping the gas filter, did some custom stickers, and have a few projects on my 912 that are in-progress, time to detail and wax the cars, but am getting itchy...... What are you doing to pass the time?

Fixing my SO's elliptical machine today.  If that lunatic doesn't exercise everyday she gets lunatic-er and I have to sleep with one eye open.

Pray for me.

LOL no joke.

When I was dating my SO, she told me "I need to exercise, if I dont I get grumpy. Whenever I am, just tell me to go for a run"  Somehow that tactic loses effectiveness after the 10th time in a day or at 11pm ;-)

I'm still working on my shops- cleaning and organizing decades of accumulated new & used everything.  getting this much uninterrupted time has been largely impossible in recent years.  There's still a lot to do but I'm well past the midway point.  More things already have a specific place or there's an empty drawer waiting for it.   it's going faster and the end is easier to imagine.

Next week, I've got to get back into studio.  I've got several clay maquettes to cast into plaster and one new stone to carve asap.

I think this "lockdown"  thing brings out some crazy ideas..... The other day someone in our local neighborhood "group" was giving away a Hammond organ, For free. I have always wanted to learn to play keyboards, so I said what the heck...
we now have a Hammond organ from the 80s, sitting in our living room, and I am finding out its not very easy to learn. Lots of features, such as drums, different tempos, pedals on the bottom produce a deep Basso profundo sound, like when a kids civic with the big speaker boxes passes by the house, and the walls vibrate!
So far I can play Silent Night, and Mary had a little lamb, and I can annoy the heck out of our Jack Russell terrier at will!
My wife walks by shaking her head asking" Do you think this is how Liberace' started?"
Hmmm, thats a deep question, right there...Gotta think about that one!

One of the world's GREAT sounds-the Hammond B-3.
I've been fortunate enough to play with some killer B-3 players.  It's pure magic in the right hands.  Start with Jimmy Smith.............. ..........

My job (IT Director) is fully able to be performed from home so I'm still logging ~50 hours/wk. Could be worse - oh wait, it is. Been sick with mild flu-like symptoms for the past 3 weeks. MD says just rest (yeah right, see my first sentence) and let him know if my temp goes above 101F

Rebuilding a Benelli 175 Enduro, fettling the Ducati 860 GT and I have cleaned and sealed four motorcycle gas tanks with POR-15 tank sealer. I really like the POR-15 product, I thought I would need at pint to do two tanks, I have coated four with a single pint!

To clean the tanks I soaked them in 'Evaporust' for a couple weeks, full to the brim, then used metal etch, about a quart at a time in the tank with a big handful of screws sloshed around and once drained then pour a quart of methyl hydrate (gas line anti-freeze) in, slosh and drain, let dry. Pour the POR-15 in to the tank, seal the tank and slosh it around, it looks and flows just like paint, Then invert the tank on wood blocks and drain the POR-15 back into the can. The tank sealer dries in a couple hours and cures in about a week.

I just got the last of the bugs out of the 1965 125 San Bernardino Yamaha I redid over the winter. I also just finished up freshing up a mid '50s 40 hp Mercury outboard. Carbs, magneto, water pump impeller, crank seals and main bearings. I am halfway through the second one, my boat has twin motors. One of the big things I have done with my extra time is fix things. You know those tools and implements of destruction that have been falling apart for years but have always gotten them to do one more job.

Considering this as the lockdown continues, and I can't ride until late June.

I'm not sure what "lockdown" means, other than there continues to be no toilet paper or paper towels in any store, and the restaurants and barber shops are closed.

Every place else I go is open.   Hardware stores, construction stores, gu* stores, produce stands, banks, grocery stores, post offices ... I rode 240 miles today to take the Triumph to the shop in Richmond to see about a safety recall involving chafing ignition wires.

Some 2014s like mine just needed a checkup and an "OK", but some need to have the wiring harness taken apart and a bit of flexible conduit installed.   Mine, of course, was one of the latter, so I'll have to make ANOTHER trip next week to have that done, it being a 4 hour job.    Stopped off to see the grandkids on the way home, read them some books, have some wiffle-ball batting practice ....

.... and then do the last 80 miles home in a cold hard steady rain.   The Aerostich gear paid for itself yet again; there's nothing like Gore-Tex for wet weather.   I hate glove covers though, so I end up with cold wet hands if I'm not prepared with the KLIM snowmobile gloves, which I wasn't, not having sense enough to look at the weather forecast.

Next trip (in a couple weeks) will be 3 days of riding in Tennessee and NC with friends on our old Brits.   I SHOULD be working on the projects in the shop but there's just too much going on ....

Moto Richmond, the Guzzi/Triumph/Aprilia/Vespa/KTM shop, was humming on Saturday .... lines on the floor for spacing and disposable gloves for those that wanted to handle merchandise, but busy.   They sold one bike while I was there ... the owner said that sales are down about 50% from what they'd expect this time of year, but the shop was booked weeks ahead and accessory/clothing sales are good.   I think people are reluctant to unbelt major cash for a bike for awhile, but they're getting caught up on work that needs to be done.

I gave them a hard time for inconsistency.   On the one hand, they had masks, gloves, and spacing if people wanted them ... but on the other hand, they were selling 430 pound, 177 horsepower KTM 1290 Super Dukes that would run 180 MPH (although a naked bike would be hard to hold on to, I suspect, at that speed) ... the ultimate Hooligan Bike!

I spent a good part of a day repairing a 92' Yamaha Serow 250, my farm trailbike that was leaking fuel from the carb. Turns out it was a broken float post, so the float couldn't prevent the fuel from overloading the bowl.
I replaced the post by drilling and tapping a 3/16" hole through the carb where the post was, then I drilled a 1/16" hole through a nut, threaded the bolt into the hole where the post was and then spun the nut until it was the same height as the hole in the remaining good float post. Then I used the hole in that post and the hole in the nut as a guide and drilled a 1/16" hole through the bolt. I then shortened the bolt, threaded the nut off the bolt and built a new float pin out of a finishing nail and voila, a repaired carb. Made me feel pretty clever.

The chain saw and I are still trying to clean this mess up after the tornado hit three years ago. Then I had the m/c wreck with 15 broken bones that ut me out of commission for awhile. Once it gets 90 degrees my saw will be in exile until fall. I ain't tuff enough to run a saw when it gets above 90, but I do make exceptions.

But, you know what, nothing can take away all the memories I have of almost 50 years on a Guzzi.

Have an old CT90 that's been sitting around for a couple years. Pulled off the fuel tank and gave it a good clean, the carb had been stored dry. Took out the little 6v battery and thought, nothing to loose, so topped it up with acid, charged it over night, and damned if it didn't come back to life. Second kick and she purrs. Then took the Ducati out for the first time this year. That thing is pure hooligan. 2nd and 3rd gear power wheelies, adrenaline good. Think i will wait till I get old to get a bagger.
