While my rear end gently weeps.
« on: May 17, 2020, 04:46:59 AM »
Today I spotted this after a ride.

Has anyone replaced a seal in a small block bevelbox ?

Surely that's a recall issue Huzo ? First one off the line often seemed to have this issue.

It is much worse when this happens on a modern (less than 5 years old...) Guzzi...but I know the feeling!

This is from the manual petcock (fuel valve) This is my third one!

Hopefully the *NEW* coming from MG Cycle (again), will fix this.

Wow!  That was the title of a never released song by Elton John.  You probably knew that didn't you Huzo?

Before I saw the pictures, I was going to suggest some Kaopectate.

How could you expect me to walk away from Huzo's weeping rear end?

This either means he is in heat, or he needs some help.

What kind of friend would I be if I ignored either of those?

The reality is that there is a recall on the V85 regarding possible damage to a seal in the rear drive upon assembly. I have received an e mail indicating that I should come in and have it done but I don’t want their paws on it.
Also I have not had them do the first service and I expect them to throw their hands up in mock horror at the perceived repercussions of my inaction.
Now that WOULD get a conversation started..
I think I’ll do it myself.
The seal is a 55x40x7...can’t be too hard..

Peter,
While I can understand your reasoning in the do it yourself angle, you have a warrenty which you gave paid for why not use it.
Now weve all seen the factory reaction on the big block cam followers if there was any doubt as too regular maintenance and the hoops to jump through that followed.
You have basically bought a first model,  things will not be right on all of them, its how things go.
They have issued a recall, is it for the same seal or one of the others in the bevel box? so take it back youve paid for it and it will maybe help down the track if heaven forbid something else happens. If nothing else it allows you to point the finger at them if required later.
You have nothing to loose except the embuggerence factor and time.
Apart from that, go for a viton seal if you go it alone (buy 2, you can guess why)and have a very close look at the surface the seal runs on.
Cheers
Pete (no not the Bungendore one)

"While My Rear End Gently Weeps" - Title of your sex tape...

I just took mine in to Hamlin's for the few recall items.  My rear was not weeping (title of MY sex tape), but they took off the wheel and put on some sort of seal cover.  Fill with only 160 ml of oil.  NOT the 160-180 per the book.

Due to the "inconvenience" of these few minor recall fixes, Guzzi is extending the warranty to 3 years.  I'd take it in and get the recall fix on the record.

If it's *that* seal, no problemo. If it's the inner seal.. At least on the old small block rear drive. I've never even looked at the rear drive  on the V85.

It’s not the pinion seal that’s the subject of the recall.
I will most likely take the bevelbox in and get the recall done and if they will do the pinion seal on the house, then fine.
But if they flinch at that, then I’ll just pay for the work, that way they can all get rooted..
It needs to be mentioned that I did the first service myself and the bike is modified to some degree, so I have relinquished some of my rights.
But I don’t care..

I have in fact replaced the large seal on a smallblock bevel box.  Not an operation that presents unusual difficulty.  The issue in this post, however, is not related, IMO.

The photos of Huzo's bike strongly suggest that the leak emanates not from the large or small bevel box seal, but rather from the interface of the rear drive and the swingarm (driveshaft enclosure).  If the leak were from one of the bevel box seals the escaped lube would not travel forward to the spot shown in the photos.  But leaking from the bevel box/swingarm joint, the lube would blow rearward as would be expected.  The other possibility for depositing gear lube at this location on the rear drive would be a porous casting:  However, I think the rear drive/swingarm joint is far more likely the source.  Probably a new gasket and a very thin coat of gasket sealer would be the easy remedy.

I replaced the two crown shaft seals  on my Breva 750 bevel box .Two things learn't were when pressing in the large seal . Do not lube outer dia of seal or ally housing this gives you more control when pressing in to keep it square. Secondly do not push any more than  flush with ally housing . There is no shoulder and if pressed in too far seal hits the large ball race with bad results and your weep persists. The inner lip can be greased to give initial lube .

Start off by draining ALL the oil and refill with no more than 160 ml.  Then see if it persists.

In an effort to see if the oil was coming down the swing arm, I snapped on a new set of rubber gloves and with a liberal dose of lubricant, rolled up my sleeve and told the nurse I was “ going in for a look”.
There appears to be no emission uphill of the joint face, so I’m going with a rooted pinion seal.
The bloke at the shop said they can do it almost straight away while I go next door and have a look at the Africa Twins.
