Reverse on convert trike

Well I have been using my home made trike and have decided It needs a reverse.I bought all these motors and gearboxes and put two one way bearings in my drive roller.Had to make a muffler offset to have clearance.Well when I took it out for a test there was so much friction on the tire that I could smell burning rubber. So plan a did not work.I could make a mec















hacanical system but one way bearing  system seemed so elegant. Any ideas?

I've read that some Convert owners with sidecars modify the two-speed gearbox so that they have high range and reverse. In place of the low range gears, there are sprockets and a chain. This just from memory...

thought about doing something like that but after making my belt drive for one of my Verts ,I am not sure I have that much energy any more.I need a hip replacement and other issues hence the trike.Thanks for the feedback. I see Roadkill posted the other day. I hope he comes back.

For sure he has reverse, he told me once about the local cop clocking him at some ridiculous speed in reverse.

Yes that is exactly correct.I took it off the bike this morning and the one way bearings were still working but the grit blasted o.d.was burnished smooth. Roller is aluminum,aluminimum?

Yes I followed RK thread and saw where he bought a nice intended box. But he had the room to do it.I don't.

Perhaps the easiest thing would be a mechanical linkage to engage the reverse roller only when needed.

or maybe a rubber surface on your existing drive rollers?

On your existing set up running against the side of the bike tire, was it a case of too much friction while normally driving forward, or spinning of reverse motors while reversing?

I have thought about this and I think it is the only way to modify the 2 speed box to be high and reverse. Either a tiny chain and sprockets or a tiny belt and 2 cogs to replace the low speed gear set.

Perhaps a 1" diameter knurled shaft through just above the swing arm pivot with a lever to swing it against the tire, you would only need to swing it away 1/4" when not in use.
The lever could be an eccentric bearing arranged so any forward motion tends to throw it out.
The spare holes in the muffler hanger brackets look interesting I think I would have the motor on one side and a bearing on the opposite side I don't think you would need a one way clutch in that case as the shaft would only touch the tire when required. Could you take another picture square on?
A friend bought one of the new automatic Goldwings it has walking speed in both directions, I wonder how they accomplish that?
