Ya... I wish I could afford one... this is me in the early 70's...

That pic could have been me. I had a white helmet and a 1970 Z50 with the same colours.  My first (motorized) two wheeler.  Loved that thing. Washed and waxed it it every weekend.  Bought it used for $200 and sold it three years later- for $200, so I that could buy a real street bike, a Yamaha RD200.

But I wouldn't pay a thousand, let alone several thousand for a tiny Z50A now. I mean, to do what, put it on a coffee table?  An adult male looks like a circus clown riding one of those.

I wouldn't buy an RD200 now either.  Great memories also, like my first time on a highway - zoom!  It had an oversized front drum brake that could easily lock up the front wheel, so I learned how to make that tire howl. And if I owned it now, I could figure out how to make the spark plugs last longer than 100 miles. It was a great little bike for a young lad of 150 lbs, but now?  Not so much. The smallest old bike I would consider owning and riding regularly would be something like my old Honda CB350. And THEY are also selling for insane prices.

No idea of value but a mid sixties 90 S was most likely the best daily driver I ever owned!

I bought my Van Van because of the look and nostalgia without buying an old bike for ridiculous prices.

The Van-Van is a GREAT little 200cc bike for all the reasons you mentioned!  :thumb:

I have seriously considered one as well...

Those little bikes are for children....
Like us...
I do not want to be a child again in today’s world, but I am as happy now as when I was one.. :clock:
I was a postie for 37 years on a CT 90 then CT 110.
Conservatively 300,000 km delivering mail and every time I rode through mud with the pop pop pop of the hot exhaust, I was reminded of being 15 years old with no cares or worries on my SL 70...
Priceless..

1974

2020
I see a lot of the problems we have today are because there is a reluctance to look “childish”.
Make no mistake, we mess around with these things to capture the emotions we were handed and took for granted as kids. I am certain my bike/s (I only have one that I really love), is a metaphor for my life and I feel that it is more “me” than me.
I don’t have to wonder at why people put high value on these early ones, I know why I do..

I've seen the posts and pics by foto before; very heartwarming story and it's got to be one of the neatest, gnarliest little bikes I've ever seen.

I didn't realize it had a dual range 4 speed auto clutch tranny, it would be a wicked little trail bike, no wonder it's shod with those aggressive knobbies.

Looks exactly like the one I had. It was stolen after about a year of ownership (I was working in the Phillipines on Clark AFB).

A pox upon well-heeled collectors and "investors!"  Fist they bid up the price of old air-cooled Porsche 911s beyond all reason; OK - a dream car lost to me, but life goes on.  Now it's old bikes.   Instead of charging yearly registration to tag working bikes for the road, I wish Dept of Motor Vehicles would charge an annual "WASTE OF GOOD MACHINERY" penalty fee for bikes that are kept unridden in living rooms or trophy garages.

Yes, for people with a lot of disposable "lettuce", money is no object, especially if their attitude is:  "I don't care what the price is...I want it!!"      - - - - and the rest of us just stand by and watch.....(*SIGH*)

My first "real" motorcycle. I bought it in 1970. Already beat, with stripped splines on the kickstarter shaft, and could only be started by bumpstarting. My mom decreed that only one of us could live at home. The Honda stayed in my next-door neighbor's garage, next to his Matchless scrambler.

I picked up a 78 CT 90 a couple years ago, only because it was too good a deal to pass up.  It only needed some miner work to get it running well.  A very nice original cond bike.  Its a fun little bike but in truth it's not really practical to ride in the area I live in.  I hate having bikes I can't ride so it was going up for sale this spring, but with all this - crap I'll wait till things get better before it goes on the block.  Regarding the new gen cubs and monkey bikes they do have some appeal to the nostalgia bugs but they are all running the honda Grom running gear so you just pay extra for the retro styling on a Grom.  I bought a Grom a couple years ago while recovering from hip problems because it was light and easy to move around and I wanted something that still looked a little like a motorcycle and not like a scooter.  I didn't need retro styling because I already have enough old bikes to get that.  It's also fun to ride and really a blast, but now I'm fully recovered and I find myself going back to the bigger bikes I have.  So I find myself with two bikes I use very little anymore and it bothers me, but trying to sell essentially two toys during these times might be a problem too.

My bro had one of those.  Had a death knock when he first got it but he got the oil pump working, thrashed it mercilessly for 30,000 miles and it was still going strong when someone stole it and he never got it back.
