A day of firsts (Sunday ride on my V700)
« on: June 22, 2020, 10:09:28 AM »
First Guzzi Breakfast for several months. First Open Airplane Afternoon this year. Wandered west afterwards, picked up a sandwich at Sheetz in Hancock and ate at Widmyer Park. Then out to Green Ridge State Forest for the first time in years. Return trip via MD51, Magnolia/Detour Rd., WV9, the "Berkeley Springs Bypass" (back roads to avoid the town), back onto 9 and home through Hedgesville, Bedington, Scrabble, Shepherdstown, etc. 211 miles total.

Ooh, that K-R is an airplane I've never seen before. The original instruments are awesome. The Fairchild 22 is a really rare bird, too. I have many hours behind a Ranger, and a few behind Kinners.
Yes, the early aircraft were "quite" complicated, with metal fittings, turnbuckles, etc. to keep the weight down. Considering their size, they were very light, and had to be because of the low horsepower. Thanks for those pix.. :thumb: That had to be a great ride.

Wow I haven't heard the term "flying boxcar" in years.  When I was a kid growing up in Long Beach Calif there was a company that developed a "jet-pak" conversion for the C119.  We lived close to the airport flight path and I remember them flying over and my dad saying "another flying boxcar".  Thanks for the memories!

Great photos.  And thanks for cluing me in on the aviation museum.  Only 2 1/2 hours from me and I never knew that it was there.

I'm hoping the museum will find a permanent indoor home as this article outlines. Speaking with some of the museum members it sounds like it's going to happen. Right now all of the smaller stuff is packed away inside the "boxcars" between "Open Airplane Afternoons". Wheels and Wings is always pretty amazing. https://wingsandwheelsexpo.com/

A nice ride, nice pictures, and a good day out!

You must know those roads like the back of your hand by this time ... it's a beautiful part of the country to ride in.

I used to know the "roads" in Green Ridge well, but have forgotten how they all connect over time. Stopped off at the visitor's center first to refresh my memory a bit. Paved roads in the area? Still finding some to explore after all these years, but I'm going farther out from home to find them.

Still finding some to explore after all these years,

I know the feeling.  Recently a fanatic bicycle riding friend told me about a road that I hadn't ridden. I had been close before, but not on this particular road. Great to explore something new.

So Charlie, did you go for a ride in one of those open planes?

Not yet. I was considering it, but they were already booked about 2 hours in advance and I wanted to cover some ground before dark.

FWIW, the first fixed wing aircraft* I was ever up in was a Stearman piloted by Ms. Marty Goppert, at the Flying Circus in Bealton, VA. The second time was another Stearman, but an aerobatic flight (complete with parachute strapped on) that time, same pilot. Thoroughly enjoyed both! It's been 20 years since I was last there, might be time to go again this year.

* The first thing I ever flew in was a Robinson R22 Beta helicopter.
