V9 Bobber Side Bags
« on: July 05, 2020, 09:25:50 AM »
I have a MG luggage rack mounted on my Bobber. I’m looking at the SW Motech SLC mounts which give a wide choice of saddlebags to install. Has anyone used these mounts with the luggage rack? Opinion?

I'm confused.  You want to replace the MG mounts with SW mounts?  If so, consider the H&B C-Bow system as an alternative.  You don't have to use H&B side cases.  You can buy two https://www.motomachines.com/hepco-becker-c-bow-plastic-mold-mount and mount the side cases of your choice.  I've done this on my RE and Norge, and will be doing it for my V7 III when it arrives.

Re mounting your own bags via the c-bow system.

Any idea on the rated weight they can carry? Seems like most c-bow bags are on the smaller size.

I love the c-bow system.  It provides great flexibility and the bags are quality.  They are however, fairly smallish, so may not be appropriate for big loads.  But on a Bobber, I assume traveling solo, should be adequate.

There's rated weight approved by the OEM's lawyers and there's usable weight.  If you're using cheap ABS plastic side cases, they will crack (they didn't break off) before the mounts do. BTDT. I bought better side cases (Givi E22N).

I'd feel comfortable with any 40L or smaller side cases.  One caveat: opposite the plastic mount, I place an oversize aluminum strengthener plate on the inside of the side case.  I would do this even for aluminum cases.  The C-Bow system is quite strong but lacking a bottom bracket it cantilevers the side case from the top only.  From my perspective, this is an advantage because it provides a clean look when the side cases are dismounted and easy, simple mounting operation when you want side cases.

For a top case I use the Givi E300N2 which holds my Bell full face helmet and is transferable across the RE, Norge and soon V7 III (except I'm giving the Norge to a nephew next weekend).

I’m going to keep the MG luggage rack on the bike. I want to add a saddlebag system. I’m concerned about mounting the saddlebag supports on top of the luggage rack. They use the same screw holes.

Smaller size will work. I’m not looking for large bags.

I went and looked up the brackets you sited above. From what I could see, you ought to be able to add a spacer at the shock mount to take up the extra thickness of the rack, along with maybe a longer bolt. I'm not certain though.

I also looked up the C-Bow mounts on Moto Machines site.

Looking at how the C-Bows mount, I wouldn't expect you to have any trouble. Worst case once again, some spacers if the tube on the rear rack between the two bolts is round. You could use flat washers stacked if needed to get the clearance.

I went with the C-Bows on the V7III I just got. Minimum amount of bracketry, and the smallest bags that are hard, lockable, and watertight. It works out perfectly for my needs.
