V9 Roamer Re-Map
« on: July 08, 2020, 10:18:27 PM »
After purchasing my 2017 V9 Roamer earlier this year with only 217 miles, I accumulated miles slowly, albeit faster than the previous owner. Because the bike was below the break-in mileage, I never revved it very high: the red flashing warning light at 4600 rpm was my maximum most of the time. I really like the bike so I decided to splurge and buy the Agostini's from Cadre Cycles. Enzo advised me to get a beetle map even before getting the new pipes but other projects and a delay getting the 16 pin/usb half of the cable set-up meant that both the pipes and the cables would arrive at nearly the same time. So on the same day as they were dropped off, I installed the Ago's and downloaded my existing map and sent it off to beetle. He initially thought the file was corrupted but after several tries, he realized that the map itself was the problem. A friend in Europe confirmed his suspicions. The map, which had a 5200rpm rev limit and no data above 7200 rpm was, in fact, a 35kW restricted A2 map. A call to the Triumph dealer in Ft. Myers where I purchased the bike confirmed that the bike was sold new in the US.  The sales manager said he would check with the local MG dealer to get any details. Your guess is as good as mine at this point. Wrong map loaded somewhere along the line probably. Even though it might not be such a bad idea, we don't have HP restrictions for new riders here in 'Murica so it is doubtful if not impossible that someone did this intentionally.

Takeaways? The Agostini pipes are awesome in sound and appearance.  dB killers are installed and I can't imagine why anyone would want it to be louder.  Wait, I can imagine it but just not me. The pipes are much better proportioned than the well-made but way too bulky OEM catcon mufflers. The three-pin adaptor cable came from Amazon but is now out of stock.  The 16 pin/usb OBD cable was sourced from eBay and listed for Audi, VW, SEAT and Skoda cars but it turned out to work just fine. I say that it turned out to work fine because in the middle of trying to figure out the nature of the mapping problem, I ordered a complete set of both cables from eBay as well.  If anybody wants them, PM me to save $5 off the eBay price.

I owe thanks to Mark/beetle for persevering on this. It is a minor miracle of the information age that someone on the other side of the world in Oz together with someone halfway around the world in Europe could combine their wits to get my bike running so well.

Wow.  What a difference that would make (map).  I had the Ago pipes on my 1400.  With the noise and emission rules in place, the unfortunate effect is as you said with the pipes.  Those large cans allow the stock bike to make good power, but to my eyes as well, appear too large on all the modern Guzzi models.  With my current V85, the pipe plays a much smaller part in the overall look of the machine, so I have not considered changing it but if I had any of the v7 or v9 models, it would be one of he first things to change.

UPDATE: my 2017 V9 Roamer continues to get better mileage than it did with the original map despite the fact that I am now using all of the rev range and generally wringing out the throttle every time the road is clear ahead. I have consistently seen 3-4 mpg more, both on the display and as calculated at fill up. I realize that mileage improves after break-in but it would seem that harder riding would largely cancel out the gain in reduced internal friction. How can a fatter, higher performance fuel and ignition map yield better mileage? I dunno but it does.  Yippee and all praise to Mr. Beetle :boozing:

Glad to hear your Roamer is doing well. :thumb: Beetle, without a doubt, works magic.

I just sent Mark the following email.....

"So I put the map on or is it "in"? On Sunday as the new exhaust was going to be hare Monday. Well customs did not release the exhaust. I rode the bike and it ran good like always and got almost 60 MPG. Very good.
After about 300 miles with your map I had to quickly merge with traffic and really twisted the throttle. WOW. Really surprised that the bike accelerates much harder/better. I just never tried it as I just do not ride the bike that hard. Really glad I found this out before I put the exhaust on. Now I know it is real and not just because I can hear the engine working. ;)"

So I got the pipes but they sent 2 left side brackets, :( Supposed to be getting the right side next week.

Before the remap I tried running premium gas and saw 2-3 MPG increase so now I always run premium. Only a dollar or 2 more per fill up so I think it is worth it.

I’m finding this re mapping interesting because I had a similar problem with my Bobber. The bike was having other issues and Piaggio gave me new mapping which changed the bike’s performance.
