a Bmw r100gspd is not a Moto Guzzi lemans mk1
« on: July 27, 2020, 07:34:32 AM »
holy moly, ive been riding my gspd for nearly 7 years as my only bike while putting off rebuilding the guzzi (thanks to --19 I had time to finish it). I just put on @200 miles on the newly rebuilt lemans and let me say, I forgot how fast, smooth and agile the lemans is compared to the Bmw.  engine was upgraded with rebuilt heads, gilardonis and megacycle cam and parts balanced, transmission is super smooth thx to Charlie Cole.  my only problem is I have nowhere to put my stuff!  I got so used to the trunk on the tank of the Bmw and the panniers.  I usually put my phone, wallet, cheaters (just in case I need to read something) into that wonderful trunk.  now I don't know what to do with my crap, backpack? I have a little sandwich Tupperware box next to the battery to store papers and whatnot.  I guess I need to rebuild the tool tray.  right now it doesn't fit with the new harness, or build another box for ontop of the battery.  can't even think where to mount my phone when I need to use the map.

I'm always happier when I travel fast and travel light.  It forces me to focus on what I need and be creative.  My buddies with lots of luggage always take waaaay more than they need.

I use a generous backpack and throw over bags.  Perhaps a small tank bag for items you need immediate access to.  Shoes and jeans take up the most space so I wear items that do double duty.  My boots are Doc Martens because they are comfortable enough to hike in.  My jeans are Duluth Trading Fire Hose jeans.  Plenty of protection, yet good enough to wear in the evening.

Be creative, I think you'll love the change.

When did Charlie Cole rebuild your tranny.  Can't be recently?

I know it distracts from the beautiful lines of the Le Mans, but I have been using a regular Eclipse tank bag, as well as a newer magnetic bag. I prefer the magnetic, as it mounts much easier than dealing with straps.

oh, I think around '13. thats when I took the rest of the bike apart. I think it was one of his last to do. in hind sight I was going to to do a gp shift drum swap from an eldorado but wanted to save a few bucks so I didn't, I really should have, It makes so much better sense.  if he ever decides to do any more work I may have it done, but I don't see that happening

my problem is just finishing the bike and have a perfect paint job Im afraid to even look at the bodywork sideways in fear of a blemish :)
where if I drop the GS, which ive done a few times, I just shrug and pick it up and brush off the dirt, gravel whatever

Of course that's what that old airhead was designed to be , a tough old work horse that will shrug off abuse . Hell , even a banged up GS/PD will bring large ghitis .

Depending on the length of the ride I would start out with a duffle bag bungeed to the seat, then a tank bag, then for rallies and camping I have some Eclipse soft saddle bags. The straps are arranged so they don't touch the paint.
Any more its just day trips so a duffle bag for a rainsuit, sneakers, water is all I need.

I use a messenger bag and if it gets too heavy I will just bungee it to the seat.

Hey Tom, is that your lemans before the ice blue restore?  That place is up by me. You and your bike are back in Fla?

Yes, that is me.  The blue Lemans is down here, the CX is still in Manhattan, I left at the end of March when it was getting bad and work has dried up so I don't know when I will be back.

Yeah, the Red Apple was my standard stop out of the city and as you probably know the food wasn't particularly good (not terrible) but the coffee was good. Sad to see it in such bad shape but I don't see a resurrection anytime soon.

I always wear a jacket, so keys, glasses, phone and wallet go in those pockets.  My bulkiest thing to stow is a water bottle.
I do not mount the phone in any kind of harness.  When I'm riding, I don't want to look at it!  I do get the attraction of a gps, but I don't often need one.

I have a variety of bags; on my CX100 (Lemans II) similar to your bike, my GIvi magnetic tank bag is always used, and if need be I've got a soft sided CorTech tri bag system.

I know exactly what you mean! I've ridden my PD across the country. I've used it for daily transport. I've hauled anything and everything on it. "You'll need to come back with the truck" they've said at yard sales. Hah! The handtruck came home just fine!

I've been riding the Guzzis now for four years and none of them have luggage. That's what I miss most - luggage. So a Kriega back pack and rear dry bag help out. Magnetic tank bag of course. And there are some throw-over soft bags if I need even more.

Seems to me you had a Ducati freshly restored and bought the LeMans so you wouldn't scratch that-now look what you've done!

Seriously, the Lemans is a remarkable bike and even in its previous state it outran and outhandled every hot rod R90/R100 I ever came across.

haha, your right Aaron, I just thought that yesterday. I was like, great, now I turned my lemans into the 750gt I was afraid to get "dirty", well the 750gt has a little more patina to it, haven't ridden it much in the last few years. think its going to be sold and the $ put into my house.  any way, having removed every nut and bolt once already on the lemans, it can be done again if need be so im not going to baby it too bad, unless the allure of big money convinces me to sell it, which is what im avoiding :)

Don't sell it unless you are sick of it and know what you want-between the LM and the loop frame you have in my opinion 2 of the best classic bikes ever.

Following this...as it's like Tom and I are on a parallel LeMans resurrection track....VA And FL.   And...waiting on my buddy to finish his Ducati 750GT basket case.  Weird....

I'm coming off of most of my last 10+ yrs riding an R69S.  First weekend on the LeMans -- bit of a ripper!

Same problem with underseat storage.  I've got a mishmash of spare plug holder, tire gauge and Heyco tools that came out of an 80's BMW 635i car a buddy parted out and my reg/insurance in a little leather bag.  The old tool tray could work for the glasses, phone charger, etc.  Just where to find one.

I've got a waterproof Kriega tail bag Ill bungie on for 2-3 day trips, but looking for the 'right' tank bag for my LeMans.

Plenty of room in an old Hein Gericke “Scout” jacket.

I’ve also become very fond of tailbags.

Put the battery behind the transmission, than you have a bit more space
And the balance point is lower.

On the other side: it's not original.

I use always a backpack or a rackpack.

If I read the original post right, you just need a place to put your SMALL stuff for around town.

If so there are a bunch of different leather or fabric pouches and bags that would work. Go to a site like J & P Cycle or Cycle Gear and see what they have. Yes, most of the stuff is HD orientated, but there may be something you like.

If there is room a pouch that would fit behind the fairing's shield, my HD has one and holds the little things. There is a whole mess of tail bags. Even ones that are designed to carry small dogs.

Another thing is security. Can you leave it on the bike or do you need to take it with you? Maybe a fanny pack type thing bungied to the seat would work?

Just some thoughts,
