« on: August 22, 2020, 08:57:29 PM »

Seller has a pair of Suzuki GT 750's for sale including this popsicle purple J model, I have always liked this bike, the 2nd bike is the blue J model, could make for a nice pair of restorations

To me nothing says 1970's like a purple GT 750

I remember those things.   Very interesting bikes.

I distinctly remember thinking that the new fangled water cooling concept for a motorcycle engine was strange.   Bordering on sacrilege.

Heck, I guess I still do.

I had 2 work colleagues that both rebuilt one of these each 20 years ago. Both of then brought the engines in to work to split the cases and remove the cylinders. Removing the cylinder block assembly on these can be a legendary job as the cylinder studs get corroded around the base of the block internally. Talk about a nightmare to separate. One worse than the other. For someone thats what I would call NOT heavy handed we needed to get brutal with one and I was sure we were going to destroy something. Strangely when they did separate we looked at what was the cause of the issue was and it didn't look terrible at all. I'd hate to tackle a really bad one.

750 cc water cooled two stroke was very fast for its' day.  The water boo was often disdained for being a two stroke but most of the disdainers couldn't beat them in a drag race.

I can tell I'm getting old because I had one of those too.

Bought it in '81 with 80,000 miles on it, it ran like a top.   It was owned by a Richmond, Virginia firefighter who worked a two-weeks on, two-weeks off schedule at the fire station.   Lived in a dorm at the top of the fire pole for two weeks, on call 24/7, then two weeks off ... he didn't have a home, every Sunday when he changed shifts he hopped on his Buffalo, rode to Florida, and spent two weeks bird-dogging beach bunnies and hanging out with friends and living wherever ... then rode back to Richmond for his next shift.

So it was all I-95 highway miles and the bike ran like a quiet smooth sewing machine.    He had the oiler adjustment turned back so that it used 1 quart of injector oil every 1200 miles or so.   (You'll note that if you change your 3 quarts of oil in your 4-stroke every 3000 miles, this bike used less oil than a 4-stroke!).

No valves to adjust, electronic ignition, nothing to fool with but chains and tires.

It had a Windjammer on it.   I loved it, but then loved a new BMW R65 more and traded this one in on it ....

I purchased a 1972 blue/green GT750 new in April of 1972. One of my buddies got the purple one. We dragged race them and they were dead equal so don't let anybody tell you the purple was faster, however a 750 Kawasaki 2 stroke triple could kick our ass. The Suzuki was a better bike thou. I put over 7000 miles on that summer and totaled it out when a 1966 Ford pulled out in front of me while I was going 70 mph. The 3 sets of points needed attention often as the spark plugs need changing too. Great bike.
Currently riding a 2022 Moto Guzzi V7 850 Special, a 2023 Heritage Classic Anniversary Edition, and a 2020 Triumph T120 Diamond Edition.

The first new bike I ever owned was a 1976 GT380. I could not afford the 750 and the 550 was more than I wanted to spend. Great bike, as long as you used synthetic oil for the auto lube system, which smoked much less accelerating from idle. The 550 and 750 had to have the center cylinder timed differently or they would overheat the center cylinder. Fast for the time and handled very nice. The Gt380 would see about 105 flat out and handled the freeway fine.

I wish we still had new 2-stroke street bikes.
