1200 Sport lopsided fuel tank

G'day all,
I removed the fuel tank on my 1200 Sport to remove the wiring for a set of heated grips/jacket heater that I no longer needed.  I put the bike back together and all seemingly went well. 
I went for a ride the other day and it was going well until I had to stop at an accident for a little while.  The bike started to 'miss' once in a while, but there was no hesitation when I was riding it, just at idle.
I was doing some work on the bike today and I noticed that the fuel tank had been rubbing on the left hand spark plug cover.  There was a noticeable difference in the gap between the fuel tank and spark plug cover on either side.
It looks like I've somehow re-attached the fuel tank incorrectly, or is there some trick that I've missed when putting it back on?

Your Sport is the same as my Norge in that regard Steve and I cannot think of anywhere that you could have gone glaringly wrong.
Ensure that there is not some misplacing of the wiring harness under there.
Are the two rubber bungs that locate the tank at the front in place ? They slide into recesses in the tank.
Did you have any grief undoing the quick connector for the fuel line ?

The wiring harness is still in place, I just had to cut a few cable ties to take the additional wiring out.  The rubber bungs are still there, although I'm not sure how they're secured, they could have slipped or moved?
I never undid the fuel connector, I just lifted the tank and supported it with a block of wood.
I'm hoping the two problems are caused by the same thing and it's something simple, otherwise it's a trip to Bungendore.

From memory Steve, the bungs slide onto steel pegs in the time honoured fashion.
The bloke who sold the bike was very upfront about having dropped the tank once, but I cannot conceive that it could be damaged and not be noticeable.
Just loosen the rear bolt and remove it and see how straight the tank sits with no pressure applied, a bit of a wobble will see if there are any forces pushing it out of line.
My Norge tank is as snug as a bug when wedged up on those bungs and your bike is the same, I trust the pegs have not been bent have they ?
They are mild steel, so if you have a bent one, you can straighten it safely with some judicious application of brute force and ignorance..

With the rear bolt undone it's still noticeably lopsided, so I'm sure that it was something that I've stuffed up when I was putting the tank back on.  I'll have to take it for a ride though, just to 'empty the tank' a bit to help out with removing it  .
Once the tank's off, I'll check the mounting pegs and have a good look around under there to see what's going on.

Don’t expect an easy time if you try to undo the fuel line.
They are a tricky thing and rather frail, call me if you need some advice, I have had my Norge one off dozens of times, but you’ve to be cautious....
