Personally, big brother needs to leave us alone to make our own personal decisions. The LEOs have more important stuff to deal with than ensuring we wear our helmets and seat belts.

Besides, how can natural selection weed out the gene pool otherwise?

Interestingly enough, the fine for riding without a helmet in Missouri was $25 (plus court costs).  $100 if ya got busted wearing a non-DOT helmet.

This latest Missouri ruling leaves 19 states with mandatory helmet laws.

I choose to wear a FF or modular helmet, but there are times when I am in a state park and want to just do a slow roll through the campground to the camp store or office and chose not to wear a helmet where I can legally do so.

I have personally witnessed many situations where the more gear someone wears the more risk they are willing to incur.

Same ratio in Tennessee, but the odds of getting pulled over without a helmet are much higher.

One day I was riding to Florida for work (no helmet state) and saw a guy riding with just a ball cap on.  He had Kentucky plates, (no helmet state) and was hoping to make it to Florida without getting pulled over, or just didn't care.  LOL!

I run a stretch of Interstate 44 - in and out of St. Louis for work - and quite often see helmet-less riders. 
Maybe entering Missouri from Illinois (no helmet state). 

I'll keep wearing mine because it's the easiest way to keep my little bald head from getting sunburned !

I'll keep wearing mine, but it does seem a little silly that all the surrounding states have no requirement. How a line on a map makes a difference is beyond me.

Well, NOW the LEO's have to verify you're 26 years old and have proof of medical insurance to ride helmet-less. Great use of a LEO's time!

CT has been helmetless since 1975. A few years back they passed legislation that a motorcycle passenger younger that eighteen years old must wear a lid.

In Washington State we used to have a no helmet policy in the late 1970's. I was riding my trusty 1966 Suzuki 150 over to the U district in Seattle and I got stopped by the police. I did not have eye protection! I was ticketed for not having my Moto Endorsement. I took the test and have the License.
I personally like to have a helmet on my head. I have a 1/2 helmet, 3/4 helmet and a full faced helmet. It depends on the weather, as to what I wear.

  Larger insurance costs I hope. Otherwise its not a personal choice.

Insurance companies dictate much of these kinds of laws which go into effect.
I wear a helmet most of the time even when passing through states with “no helmet required “ policies.
I investigated two motorcycle fatalities where Bell helmets were removed from the deceased.
I just pointed out a couple factors on the subject. Personally regardless of the law I chose to wear a helmet the majority of the time I’m on a motorcycle.

I’ve seen brains on rip rap bc someone wasn’t wearing a helmet. I’ve also had severe damage to the front of my full face helmet. Damage that would have resulted in major reconstructive work if I hadn’t been wearing it. I never ride in shorts, or T-shirts, or sandals. That’s my personal choice and anyone who wants to mock me can go right ahead.

However, all the “big brother can’t tell me what to types” sure do get offended when I tell them to their face that if they want to be idiots, that’s their right! IN MY OPINION riding without a helmet is stupid. Plain and simple. But it’s your life. Just don’t get all defensive because you get called out on it. I get called out for riding fast. That’s fine. What’s not fine is if I expected everyone to be like me. You can shake your head at me, and I’ll do the same at riders without helmets. Or with a helmet and shorts and a tank top.

Most automobile crash fatalities are due to (or heavily contributed to by) head injuries, which means that more people die in automobiles due to head injuries than die on motorcycles due to head injuries.

If it were simply a matter of "You Must Be Protected For Your Own Sake" or even "You Must Be Protected For The Good Of The Society Who Must Pay For Your Injury", then automobile drivers and passengers would be required to wear helmets too.

But they're not, which leads one to a different conclusion as to why these laws are in place.

I wear a helmet everywhere all the time on a motorcycle not because I'm afraid of a head injury if I crash (if that were true, I'd wear one in the car too or else be a bit hypocritical to myself), but because of June bugs, hail, gravel, crap thrown up from cars and trucks, and all the other hazards that I'm subject to while riding a motorcycle but not while I'm ensconced in a car.

Besides, it's a 50 year-long habit.   If they lifted the law that I could go "Tackle Out" in public, and not have to wear my pants or u-trou as I walked down the street (for which I'd get arrested today), I still wouldn't go without my pants because I'd feel naked (so to speak) without them.   Same with helmets.

I might ride down the road in my neighborhood or to the corner store without a helmet, but even if we had no law here, no way in hell I am riding over 20 mph without a full face--  not for safety sake, i just hate the wind blast in my eyes.  I feel like any open face, 3/4, or pudding bowl is torture to ride in-- my eyes are far too sensitive to deal with the wind and dust.


Does the new MO law require wearing eye protection for those without a helmet?  I know that's the case in SC

Well, if helmets are only good for insect and flying road hazard protection, and saving your skull if you get rear ended at low speed in an intersection, or getting your nose or ears ground off in a slide, why be bothered?
