Moto Morini 500 Project
« on: October 15, 2020, 08:45:11 PM »
Here is a good candidate for a complete restoration of a Moto Morini 500 (pretty much the same as the one I have). 500 cc twin, electric start and triple disc brakes (Grimeca),

These are nice light bikes and they handle well, power is nothing to brag about but they look great when restored back to prime condition.

It's going to need a lot of work but it appears to be all there.

Parts availability is decent for these from Mdina Italy in the UK

https://www.mdinaitalia.co.uk/

and from Herdan Corp in the USA

Only needs...... EVERYTHING!

I do fancy owning a Morini (preferably an wire-wheel 3 1/2) someday.   This one has a lot of corrosion.

Nice Nylon rear sprocket. I remember them from the 80's

That one has been advertised on the Morini Facebook page for $2500, I'm guessing his reserve is the same. Stuck engine, no title and generally ratty condition. Not worth it IMO.

Looks like an alloy sprocket to me. My 500 Strada had one.

Yea, maybe. I went to the max resolution and you might be right. It's very white, just like a nylon. Nylon sprockets also didn't have any lightening holes. Maybe just surface corrosion and or a weird image.

Ditch that nylon rear sprocket.  I had one back in '78 on my Honda 400f that exploded on the freeway onramp with exiting results.  and a long walk home

Like jas67 and Charlie said/implied, you will be a certified Morini expert by the time this one is in prime shape and on the road.

BUT sometimes that's half the fun .....

And one will have far more than it's market value spent.

I would have been better off buying a 500 like the one advertised for a couple thousand than the decent looking 1978 500 I bought for much more that ended up needing everything, and I mean everything in the end despite it being described as having an excellent drive train. Personally I go for the worst condition but the most complete bikes I can find for the lowest cost knowing I will rebuild and / or replace all of it. At least in the end I know I have a good motorcycle. But then again I think I am a sucker for punishment.
