Saying goodbye to the little hero
« on: October 28, 2020, 11:34:03 AM »
Some of you know about Benny , the 26 lb Terrier/ Border Collie cross we more or less adopted about 4 years ago . He was never really a pet , always had his own agenda , part of which was to protect the neighborhood , a job he too seriously , and was pretty effective at performing .

Anyway , about 6 weeks ago he was in decline , so we went to the vet , and after some treatment he recovered , or seemed to . Apparently he had contracted meningitis and the vet missed it since it is so rare in older dogs .  We tried everything , unfortunately we just couldn't get in front of it . This morning as 10:00 he crossed over to the other side . We had several minutes to say goodbye , he was already slightly sedated , first time in a week he was pain free . I wrapped him in his blanket and we sat outside watching it rain , he seemed at peace as I held him for the last time , he always enjoyed his lap time .

So long Benny , you will be missed .

Sorry to hear that, brother. It'll be odd talking to you on the phone without you having to pause and holler at him, every few minutes. Glad he's no longer hurting, and best wishes to you.

Dusty, I'm so sorry to hear about Benny.  I recall the phone calls where Benny was after the mailman, or some other mischief.  Felt like I knew him.  You gave him a good environment, allowing him his independence, but caring for him when he could no longer care for himself.

So sad; losing a pet is one of life's worst experiences. After losing our 18 year old cat, doubt we will have another??

I’m very sorry for your loss Dusty.   He sounds like he was a scrappy little fellow, and a friend to you and neighbors.   I’ve heard him many times, but regret not meeting him in person.

I’m glad you were able to hold him at the end.

Dusty,
Only another pet owner like me fully understands. At least you got to hold him at the end. It is truly sad when they take off and you don't know what happened to them.

Sorry to hear that Dusty. If the little guy could, he would have thanked you for everything you've done. You gave him a good home and a job to do. RIP little hero

Im sorry , Dusty. I dont know what to say. I have a 14 y/o Jack Russell terrier companion that is also in decline, and I will have to face the same thing soon....reading your story about the little Hero sure  makes the computer screen get all blurry....
Take care,
Rick.

That's a sad story Dusty as it sounds like there was a strong attachment between you two. Benny's pain is over and your grief begins. Give yourself time mate.

Benny was abandoned by a family who moved away from the hood , and for a year he lived under a house across the street . He  had a couple of families that put out food , but no real home . It took a month to finally gain his trust , and even then he remained incredibly independent . Before we took him in he ended up at a shelter and was adopted . A week or so later he was back .According to the address tag on his neck he had traveled 6 miles and had to cross several busy streets on his journey back to where he considered home .
