It's winter. Whatcha working on ?
« on: December 28, 2020, 07:52:33 PM »
I usually get a couple of bikes to work on for winter projects.  We've had a mild fall/winter so far - and we're not finding the project bikes that usually pop up.

We pull the wheels, tank, etc, and go thru everything - wheel bearings, all of the fluids, including brake fluid, etc.;
Add accessories.  Sand/shine/buff/polish/wax.

These last three turned out to be well maintained by the previous owners.  LOL - I was almost disappointed.  There were some minor paint chips and misc missing fasteners.  Rear brake pads were marginal on one - and replacing ten year old tires.

Finished this Honda, and then added approximately 1,500 miles before selling it to a local guy.

Picked up this 2000 model Jackal and gave it a good sorting.  It's now 1,000 miles later, and it's running out quite nicely.  Still looking at luggage options.  Some 30 liter HB's might be nice.

The latest is this 1998 Cali EV Tour.  It came with the 40 liter HB's and a huge HB top box.  LOL - went thru the trouble to remove the tank and discovered a brand new air filter already installed.  The shaft unit and swingarm were well greased.  One missing fastener on top left shock mount.  Tires had good tread, but were ten years old.  I DID get to detail it and shine the paint.

Still looking for a "beater".  Something to ride when it warms up a bit in the winter, but there's still salt on the roads.

So, what's everyone else doing ?

Fantastic job, all three are beautiful! That Honda is really stunning, IMO. I just love the lines on that bike, and know zero about them.

Oh, as for what I'm working on... well, I have all my riding gear cleaned and organized... :undecided:

My T-3 needs some deep cleaning along with some maintance items. The problem is that I am - isolated currently and miss having a Guzzi cheerleader squad to motivate me. Second thought need the local girls volleyball team. They helped me out a few years ago when I was returning from a road trip and the Norge was kind of dirty. As was returning through my hometown the local volleyball team was having a fundrazier car wash. So pulled in and had the Norge cleaned. It took some supervision and instruction with the three girls working on it but I really didn't mind.

That's a 2006 Honda VTX1300.  V-twin, single carb, shaft drive.  Easy maintenance and simple to work on.  Very reliable, and excellent aftermarket parts.

I need to organize my gear !

Replace guides and valves on LMIII.  Intake guides were shot - so bad it affected jetting and how it ran.  It is a much happier bike!

But have now torn into the Ariel to replace the big end, cam bushings, touch up valves and fix an oil leak.   :undecided:   It ran so sweetly!

I am getting close to finishing my 1968 Sears Gilera 106 SS, just waiting for a new piston to come from Italy. My 1949 Moto GUZZI Airone is getting a full restoration, it’s all stripped down to the last nut and bolt, waiting on lots of parts to show up from Italy. Another GUZZI project is the 1948 or 49?  GTV 500 motor I am building and hope to fire up in 2021, and again waiting on parts from the old country. I am helping a friend rebuild his Ambassador engine and transmission. I am going to get started on rebuilding my 1975 Moto Morini 3-1/2 engine. Plenty to keep busy during this - lock down period.

Catching up on some portraits:

This is a friend’s father who passed away earlier this year...

Currently working on portraits of my girlfriend’s dogs...

...and apparently I’m also draining my lithium battery... again. You’d think I’d learn by now to pull the leeching auxiliary wires.

No big plans for the bike this winter.. Ive been sorting over the last two, and other then a once over, and oil change its pretty set. Might check the tire balance, or bearings.. started getting a little shake at higher speeds..  Im working on fixing up a 72 ford LTD convertible..  Ive had it for many years, and its just been sitting for almost 20. Ive been slowly fixing it up over the last 5 or so, and hope to get her on the road soon. I also have a 74 dodge powerwagon that I have been reviving. Been in the family since 76, and only has 19K miles. Its been sitting out side forever though, and has a lot of rot, and other issues. I got it running and up to my shop this fall, and just working on getting the paperwork sorted in my name before I dig in and put money into it...  Other then that my only plans are to keep sane.

Been fixing a few things and replaced the old, dry rotted tires on Pat's Ambassador before it goes to a new home. Very enjoyable test ride yesterday.

Also, finished a Convert engine and am nearing the end of this "hot rod" Le Mans project.

Still working on my Morini 3 1/2 Strada, finished the carbs on Sunday.

Expanding my technical horizons a bit, and getting into the transmission on my 1955 BSA M21.

Taking off the outer cover with the shifter mechanism

Then comes the gear cluster and shifting forks:

Gotta figure out how to get the drive sprocket off the other side of this shaft, outside the cases, so that this shaft will come out:

Winter's project for sure!

Lannis, that BSA 'box is so clean.  It looks really similar to the Burmans in the Ariels but they are filled with grease and oil, they have no drain plug so when you pull the cover they are a real mess!

After years of planning & collecting plus the - bounty, right now I'm trying to get everything mounted, plumbed/wired, operational, etc.  old injuries die hard, so I'm ready to make doing things less physical.  Most of this has been done in Dec-

Arbor press is mounted in a cast iron stand.  Planishing hammer mounted on a floor stand, waiting on design & fabrication of a a foot pedal

Shrinker is mounted on cast iron floor stand with compound foot pedal assembly just finished around lunchtime.  Works great.  I'll do some refinement later-

Bead roller is mounted on a spare Unisaw cabinet, now waiting for motor & foot pedal to be configured & mounted.

Lathe is cleaned and back together, waiting for motor & cone mount redesign.  Then some wiring, probably a few VFDs to get my bigger machines running, some better lighting and more cleaning out to make space.

I'm currently working on this RD350 cafe seat. I started it with great enthusiasm about a month ago, then a took break to heal & fix some equipment to avoid more aches & pains In the future. Ready to get back to working on it-

May not be much Galaxie or Guzzi progress this winter. I do need to pick up some V700 parts.  Now that my equipment is easier to use, I'm optimistic about doing more on them sooner instead of later.

1986 Chevrolet El Camino Conquista.  Immediate project is the mechanical fuel pump then bleed the brakes after replacing the left rear brake cylinder.  The rear brakes have a goofy circular spring steel mounting clip no bolts to hold it on the backing plates.  Driver side door pins.

2003 Mercedes Benz E320 SBS pressure accumulator and bleed brake system.  Change out right front brake rotor and abs sensor.

2004 Hyundai Accent fuel pump.

2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser.  Not sure why it's not firing.  Could be timing belt broke. or a ignition sensor.

1993 Strada.  Brake master cylinder rebuilds. Hand & foot.

1993 1000S.  Both of them.  Starter Interruptus.

1993 Cali.  Rear brake m/c rebuild.

The care and feeding list goes on for the Pacific Moto Guzzi Wildlife Preserve.   🤪  I stay employed because my to do list while retired is extensive.
From the Deep Deep South out in left field.  There are no stupid questions.  There are however stupid people asking questions.  🤣, this includes me.  😉 Hawaii.

I'm not sure what the deal is on this particular box.   It's not actually the one in my M21.

I bought it at MidOhio one year because the box in my M21 was missing the shift to third gear from second (fourth to third worked just fine), and I figured I might need spares.

So it's finally time to get to work on it, so I took this spare box apart to see how they are put together before removing the one from my M21 (if any little springs are to fly across the shop into oblivion, I'd like to know which ones!)   Although everything inside looks good, nothing chipped or worn, it had no gearbox oil in it, so I don't know what that story is.

Once I'm up to speed on this one, I'll take the one out of my bike and tackle the third gear shift forks and actuator.

Next up will be the Burman BAP box out of my '35 Matchless V-twin.   It's a grease gearbox, so I hope it will be a greasy mess inside since I don't have a spare waiting in the wings!

Trying to figure out why my chain of the CB750 is kinked (Alignment problem maybe), so I will have to re-align tire set/chain set etc.  Keeping my eyes open for used bikes to makeover/fix up and sell in the spring.  Have to do something to stay busy in the retirement years!

[NGC]  This is a 2007 Suzuki Hayabusa that needed a couple of shifting forks and a new 1st gear, which is a bit odd because these are known for lunching 2nd gear, not 1st.

The bike was at 55,xxx miles with a steady diet of Rotella 15W-40.  5K mile oil changes.  Ridden whenever the temps above 40 degrees.  30 mile round trip commute and majority local and two lane riding.  Occasionally flogged.

We expected to see some sludge.  Something.  Turned out to be pretty clean inside.

I *really* like the foot operated shrinker/stretcher.  :thumb: If I did more of that kind of work, I'd copy that instead of using a hand operated one.

Finally finished varnishing (with one hand) and hinging the ailerons on the wings. I've learned a lot about wooden wings, but I'm over it.

Thanks, Chuck.  It works great but isn't finished.  The goal is to get my mill & lathe running soon to make better pieces for it to eliminate play.   Right now everything pivots on old 1/2" bolts with a variety of washers pretending to be shims....  I'm going to try to stipple the jaws with carbide to eliminate the marks caused by the teeth on these plain shrinker/stretcher jaws.  The mechanism was someone else's great idea (inspired by a pair of vise grips)  that I adapted to this old stand that i got a few years for such use.  Their 100% fabricated versions are probably fancier, but I prefer cast iron

And I always love to see your airplane projects.  Thanks for the pics.  Please keep them coming.

It seems like collectively there is a lot of knowledge about Guzzi's here .

So let me ask you fellers :  My clutch (when new bike) kept needing adjusting for the first 3000 miles -while getting harder to pull with every adjustment.  So , I just got used to it as it slowly got stiffer.

I'm ready to fix it in January .    So , can I pull all the clutch rod stuff by only taking the swing-arm off ?

V7II

From the feel of it ???  There could be two balls stacked on the end of a push-rod in a hole , the balls might be double stacking in their hole ???

I usually get a couple of bikes to work on for winter projects.  We've had a mild fall/winter so far - and we're not finding the project bikes that usually pop up.

We pull the wheels, tank, etc, and go thru everything - wheel bearings, all of the fluids, including brake fluid, etc.;

I really miss walls of license plates.  Damn shame that habit has become rare....

I  have done a lot of car and truck manual transmissions and Brit bike...But I was a bit shy about Japanese bike trannys...Until I flipped over a few Honda engines and worked on the transmissions..A place for everything and it's all easy to see...And easy to fix if you have experence to spot what's wrong
