Update - BaT drafted the ad and sent it to me for review and approval / edit suggestions. I sent over a list of edits, some of which were incorporated. The ad went live no reserve today for the 61 Matchless. The ‘80 v50ii is a week or so behind in the ad drafting stage. Now it is time to just watch the auction and respond to any questions. So far it feels pretty much like an eBay auction.

I saw the bid and really liked the number. If everything goes wrong for me and right for you you can have the bike at a great price. It wouldn’t be the end of the world.

It’s above mine too John. That’s why I’m selling it. It really needs to either be in one of those wonderful painted-floor collections or thrashed and scratched with abandon. I’m not at either end of that spectrum. I really enjoyed getting it right, but my SR does everything better and thumpier, and I can replace parts off eBay at will. Plus the proceeds will fund another project or two.

From what I've heard, BaT rejects roughly half of the vehicles that are submitted, so it's not exactly everyman's replacement for Craigslist or eBay. As the OP has mentioned it's also not the sort of deal where you decide "I'm going to list my bike this weekend". It's a time consuming process.

I like the site, but it's not a place where anyone can sell whatever they want. They choose what will be listed, if the bike doesn't appeal to them than you're out of luck. Up until recently they were rejecting 916s and the like though lately they've been making up for lost time on that Ducatis from that era.

I agree with you to a point. BaT was just purchased by the Hearst Corp, a for profit, legacy publishing house. I expect going forward, BaT will loosen up their auction acceptance, to a point, that eventually, everything will be accepted. Only a matter of time, until they start to categorize auctions.

I see today BAT has announced they have added a shipping service option for all auctions. I think that could be a significant perk.

Indeed! For the love of me, I can't figure their selection criteria out. I have a one-owner 1997 Buell S1 Lightning in excellent condition I submitted to BaT for auction. They turned me down flat.
Hurt my feeling, I tell ya!

So they won't list a clean one-owner motorcycle of which only a couple thousand were made, and I'd be surprised if there are 100 left in the country in running condition, but the same week they list a Honda 750 Nighthawk, one of Honda's most boring motorcycles, of which untold thousands were made? Go figure.

I agree. I think the current /7 with the sidecar is a snoozer. I think their motorcycle auctions as a whole don't have any cohesion. Ultimately, they are going to have to find a direction. There are plenty of great and interesting bikes out there. Maybe they could pay me to sort through submissions and pick bikes...

I have a relatively recent experiance with BaT. I sold a vintage Lancia on the site and it worked out very well. They require that you submit photos of the vehicle prior to posting the vehicle and opening up bidding. They can and do reject submissions. They keep track of both sellers and bidders history so if there are any issues there is a history there that one can check. If one violates one or more rules they get banned.
It is a different site than Craigs list in that BaT is aimed at the enthusiasts market not so much the general public like Graigslist or EBay. They people that are bidding on your vehicle know the mark and vehicle there is not too many if any "tire kickers" that waste your time. The folks that are bidding and contact you are generally serious. At least that has been my experience. I met a very nice Lancia enthusiast who was the winning bidder on my car. The buyer pays the fee to BaT.

Odd that he doesn’t reveal exactly what he is referring to. History can mean many things. I notice that he just registered on BaT.

I am not saying this is the case here, but I have noticed in other auctions, someone will throw shade on a vehicle. You have to wonder if they are doing it, so one of their buds can snag it, at an under market price. Again, just sayin’.

People like to mock Ebay and say it sucks. Ebay has one great point for a bidder, the buyer protection plan...I bought a Jeep Cherokee on Ebay 10 years ago from a large dealer in Maryland. The car was delivered as promised but no title. My numerous calls got me fake promises.I notified Ebay, the buyer protection plan rep was on the dealer like flies on shit..I in addition call the Maryland AG...Within days a new title arrived by courier....

Now the auction is getting into new and uncomfortable territory. Yesterday someone with no history on the site posted a comment that “This bike is known to the TCS/ comp singles register with history and details.” I’ve asked for clarification but the poster is silent. I can’t find any such registry. I am concerned that this will chill bidding. If the history is positive, it might increase bidding. The auction has 2+ days yet.

I have messaged BaT that if this isn’t resolved I might pull the bike from the auction, which may well get me banned from the site. I have the v50 in the ad drafting stage.

I’m not concerned about losing BaT as a tool, but I don’t want to be a jerk. I also don’t want to see the bike go for short money as a result of this.

Am I just being paranoid? What would you do?

First, I didn't take it as a negative comment. Second, if the person isn't a regular and just joined to comment on your bike, I don't think he carries much water. I wouldn't stop the auction or pull the bike.
