Display motor datas (rev, motor temp, voltage...)

Hello,
here is a subject for those who wish to display engine data:
- Rotations per minute
- cylinder head temperature
- intake air temperature
- voltage battery
- ignition advance
- throttle opening percentage

I needed it to best adjust the mapping of my V7 III, but it must work on other Guzzi (at least on those that have a 5AM or MIUG3 ECU).

1.A cable is needed to access the data:

I just put it behind the flying screen, but I'm not sure if I will keep it very long.
There I chose to display the rpm, the opening, the cylinder head temperatures and the air intake, the battery voltage and the ignition advance.

chrisfer -- you just confirmed 50% of my assertion that a SpeedHut Freedom CAN-BUS Tachometer could be driven from the BlueDash (MGMP) connection by the battery!!!

I have a tachometer on order for Louis97 who accepted my offer to build one at my risk.  Waiting for SpeedHut to deliver (takes them about a month to build to individual specifications).  I have the BlueDash connector and tools to build the cable.  Four wires: CANbus High, CANbus Low, Fuse B Ignition-On power, and Ground.

I've been meaning to get a CANbus reader for both my V7 and for a friend's SCTA roadster.  Guess I have no excuse now.

EDIT: the Lonelec adapter reads the one-wire K-line diagnostic interface, not the two-wire CANbus BlueDash interface.  But you confirmed MG is using standard CANbus messages.

It is also possible to take an ODB without a display which sends the information back to the phone (waterproof or protected), in Bluetooth or in Wifi.
It is preferable to choose an ODB module that goes into standby and turns on automatically, to avoid drain the battery.

These ODB Scanners recognize the K-Line protocol (KWP2000 : ISO14230-4 - SAE J1979)

Put it simply on the 3pin adapter (Lonelec-Fiat) and then download Torque or other application that allows you to select the types of dials and values ​​that you want on your phone.

Interesting post.   I’d like to be able to monitor cylinder head temp and battery voltage, but had not thought of getting that data via the OBD system.  Are thee any downsides to constantly drawing this data for display, as opposed to only grabbing it occasionally for diagnostic purposes?

What are some good handlebar or instrument panel displays?

SS -- as a receiver there are any issues listening to the CANbus messages.  However you have to live with the update rate of the transmitter.  You want to be careful with proper termination (120ohm resistor) and signal interference (make your own twisted pair approximately 1-2 turns per inch).

No problem to constantly visualize some data, that's what I do.

You have to choose one in relation to what you want to visualize, the most difficult is to find one waterproof...
That's why the smartphone with "Torque" is a simple and good solution (and especially with floating widget or split screen).

  Well the other side of my 50% assertion hasn't worked out so far.  The SpeedHut Freedom tachometer is not recognizing the OBD data from the CANbus lines on MG's BlueDash port.

I as pointed out above, chrisfer is using the MG's diagnostic port which uses the single-wire K-line interface not the two-wire OBD interface.  The "OBD Displays" chrisfer cited can read and display both K-line and OBD (and L-line) data.  So they are displaying only the MG's K-line data, not the CANbus data.  Most of the other "OBD Displays" have the same capability which is typically provided by embedded ELM327 hardware and software that has K-Line, L-line and OBD interfaces.  BTW that KL-1 OBD-USB adapter that is part of the Lonelec kit probably uses the ELM327.

The SpeedHut tachometer is CANbus-only so when I plugged it into the BlueDash port, it apparently can't read MG's engine speed message.  There's some possibilities (eg, message rate too low) which I will discuss with SpeedHut next week.  I will also buy that OBD (and K-line) reader like I should have a month ago and verify MG's OBD messages and protocol on the CANbus lines (not the K-line because we know that works).

To reiterate, apparently nobody but MG components are reading and writing CANbus messages, those components being the ECU, ABS, dashboard, tachometer, and MGMP.  Everybody else is using the K-line interface.
