Opinions on value
« on: March 08, 2021, 08:20:15 PM »
I have a good friend who has a 75' 850-T he bought new. He is looking at selling it. The bike is mostly stock except for things like mufflers, bags, windshield, luggage rack and seat. It has been ridden every year he has owned it and never been in long time storage. No major mechanical problems and starts and runs fine. All standard maintenance has been done regularly. I am not sure of the mileage but its around 30k. Cylinders are original. All in all a pretty good looking bike for its age. What say you all?

Chrome cylinder remediation if not dome already runs about $800ish in parts. If you can do yourself labor is free. If not a shop will be another several hundred dollars.

Value is around the 3 to 3.5k if the cylinders are taken care of. Deduct 1 to 1.5k if they are not.,

I think a good baseline is about $3000 if there are no major issues.  I always buy high and sell low though.

Agreed - $3K - $3.5K is about "CMV" (Current Market Value)

If there are no chrome issues it ought to easily go for 3500.The current mgnoc newsletter has a good article about that which claims the original cylinders are ok in most cases. If you look at the history of this bike it is an advanced version of the v7 sport, kind of like the CX,not loved when new but now collectible. If the rear brake is adjusted properly a great bike to ride.

I don't get the newsletter, but whoever wrote that story needs to come see my huge pile of supposedly "good" chrome-bore cylinders. Every Guzzi engine so equipped that I've opened up has had at least some degree of degradation. 4411 miles to 90k miles on them. Flaking, chipping, chrome worn so thin you can see the alloy casting through it.

This is a little on the extreme side maybe, but it is a view of what people are trying to explain about the chrome lined cylinders, only way to rectify is by replacing with relined cylinders or Gilardonis , if the engine has not suffered damage from the peeled chrome that is.  DonG

It seems as if time reveals an engineering weakness in most bikes.  Chrome cylinders here, v50 e ignitions, crank and layshaft bearings in combat Nortons, valve recession in airheads.  All seem like fairly easy fixes and let us get to know our bikes and bank accounts very well.

Chrome plated cylinders are good right up until the point where they inevitably fail  :thumb:

When I opened my loop top end I found a dime size flake of chrome laying on top of the piston. The 805T and T3 were also either flaked or bubbling. So out of the 3 specimens I've had its 100% failure rate. I'm sure you finding are somewhat similar.
