Shinko compared to Metzler on an EV
« on: March 28, 2021, 04:57:33 PM »

Getting ready to purchase tires for two Guzzis for the Summer Season riding.

I have used Shinkos before on a Norge in fact, I want to say that they were 712s and they were fine.

The Convert is going to get the Shinko 230 Tour Masters as recommended by Charlie Mullendore here.

Well while shopping for the V1000 tires I then went to look at the ME880 Marathons that I currently have on the 2004 EVT and wondered if anyone here has experience uses the Shinkos on the EV Touring Tonti frame...?

Appreciate any input.

Thanks,
Rob

They work on any Tonti frame . No , not the best at anything , but they are cheap and cheerful .

Shinko 777 is a tad stickier than the 880 Metzler. I only use the 777 rear, I don't care for the tread pattern for a front. I'm using the 160/70-17 on my '04. I think they make a 150.

If you want miles, Metzler. You might look at the 888 instead of the 880.

I would run the 712's on my loops if they only made a front in 110/90-18 :violent1:

Hi Rad. I won’t attempt to compare the two but I can attest to my own experience with the Shinko.
I have ran the tourer Shinko for years on all my bikes and have never had any issues with handling in any road conditions. I’ve push my bikes to the brink on the Dragon’s tail numerous times and they stuck to the road fine. I get between 5-6k on them however I’ve never gotten any more on any tire. And I don’t own stock in the company:)👍

I used the 230s on my 96 Cali, couldn't have been happier with them.

Yup, I was able to find the correct sizes for the Convent but Not the EV...  Not in 230, 712 or 777s.

I ended up with Meltzer again for the EV although a 110/80-18 front vs 110-90.  Hope it doesn't do something wonky.

Thanks,
Rob

I put the 110/80 on my Stone, I think someone heard recommended it and said it would react a little quicker in corners. In all honesty I could tell any different for the 110/90. Truth being if you have issues with lying a bike over in a curve with either tire, either will be an issue.

I found the right front size, but they didnt have the right rear that the newer EV/stones use..  I went with a 130/90 over the stock 140/80 and they work great. Granted anything is better then old hard Lazertec's, but Im happy with the 230's I used.

No tonti experience. However, I’ve ran shinkos on multiple bikes and never had an issue. I’m actually very happy with the brand. My friend had issues with odd cupping on the front of his Honda VTX1300. It was a Metzler 880. Trust me it was the tire. He swapped to a Metzler 888 and hasn’t had any issues thru several sets.

So I changed my mind One more time before checking out on the tires...  I absolutely love the way the EV handles and I can toss it into the curves in a predictable manner,  I do not want to change that.

I will wait on the 110/90-18 front instead of going with the 110/80.  The website has an option to be notified when the tire is back in stock.
Now that the Suez is nearly open, it should not be too long. lol

Thanks all,
Rob

Agreed...I have put about 1400 miles on a set of SHINKO RAVENS on my Centauro.

Not as sticky as Pirelli Angel GT's but also $100 per tire cheaper.  They work just fine... :thumb:

Probably as you say they are stock. I had an 04 EVT and the 07 Calvin but in this picture they just looked a little different for some reason. I’d love to have that set up with the lowers on my Stone?

So yeah, as mentioned, stock lowers.  I like them, keeps some of the rain off the boots in a monsoon.

This is our second '04 EV Touring.  The first we bought new in '04, went to South Dakota, Two-Up award at the National, Alabama, Virginia, West Virginia, Canada a couple of times.  For some reason it left here, I think for the Norge stage...

I missed it so badly I had this one sent form Michigan three or four years ago.  The current EVT stays.
