Firefox Focus Browser blocks all the pop up ads on my Android device.
It represents Wildguzzi properly.

I don't get this. I don't run any adblockers, and the most I get is a single pop up, each time I visit the site. Maybe two, if I visit a bunch of different threads in a row. Not that much of a hassle. Also, it's just a reality of the internet business. From what I understand, Luap mainly runs this place on his own dime and the donations that he recieves. Domains and servers aren't cheap, and I doubt that the donations he gets really cover the cost. This is an excellent board, and having to hit an X on an ad, every now and then, is a small price that I'm happy to pay.

This comes up about once a month . Here is a simple fact , it costs money to run WG , and despite the persistent rumors , there is no helicopter , private jet , or resort island . Hell , Rocker and I don't even know what it really costs to keep this place running , Luap doesn't tell and we don't ask. Probably best that we don't know . The ads generate some extra revenue that probably goes to keeping the war room at Luap's place up and running, and some upgrades , once again we don't ask .

To address the donation issue , well , if everyone that uses the site for tech info or to buy and sell in the swap meet would donate a sawbuck every year there would be an adequate money supply , but money is tight , and Luap doesn't require a fee to join . Just how it is . The ads fill in the gap , instead of running ad blocker , click on one once a day , doing so only requires 10 seconds , and adds like a dime to the coffers , but if everyone did this it would add up .

 Carry on

I've read these complaints regularly over the years and never understood what all the fuss was about, but I usually access WG on my desktop or laptop.

Different devices and different platforms make a huge difference in how the ads affect the forum and especially the posting or pm messaging.

A while ago, I had internet problems at home, and was trying to use my tablet at a local wifi hotspot to send a simple short pm message to another member, it was the most frustrating hour I ever spent in my life and I never did get the message out, I tried 2 nights in a row and gave up in frustration.

Ads appearing, bouncing up, bouncing down, blocking this, blocking that, no matter what I did, I'd almost get the message finished then it would disappear and I'd have to start all over again.

The problem is real, but from my brief experience using my tablet, I'm guessing that 99.9% of the people complaining about the pop ups are probably using tablets or phones; those devices seem to not be able to handle the pop ups or prioritize them above all other content.

Go upper right on the home page.
There is a DONATE button.
A bit below that is a "donation status" link.

This link brings you to the list of operating costs for the site.

That doesn't include the cost of computers and other things that make this place run , like the hours a day we spend answering questions and the time Luap donates to the site . Most of you probably don't know what happens that you never think about .

Hell , Charlie probably spend 30 minutes a day keeping the swap meet sorted .

My desk top computer is google free.  Very few pop up adds.  My cell phone is a android google night mare with 50% of pages pop up adds.  Face book on the android is more adds than f b post.  Even when blocked, 20 more will appear with in a couple of clicks.

What is getting out of control is the unsolicited phone calls on my cell phone.  10 or more a day for credit cards, college loans, insurance, warranties.

Thanks Justin. There should ONLY be two ads at the most on each page. If there's any more than that, someone might have spyware or something on their computer.

This comes up about once a month . Here is a simple fact , it costs money to run WG , and despite the persistent rumors , there is no helicopter , private jet , or resort island . I'm all about transparency. It costs almost $4000 per year to keep this thing going. And that's "IF" we don't have a crash that requires skills above my pay grade to get going again. Last years crash, I had to outsource the repair because it was way over my head.  That outsourcing alone costed $800, and I ate that because there was not enough excess in the donation account. Also, a lot of people don't realize that I have to pay income taxes on the donations, which is usually around $600 per year or so.

$3636 is the total basic cost. Any extra donations will go into the fund that takes care of the things listed below.

Professional American-Based 3rd party support, and consultation.
Improved technical support memberships for when there are issues beyond my control.
    Application research and development.
Domain Administration and Services, so that this domain will be around for a very long time to come.
Maintenance, security purchases and upgrades to keep the site free of malware, viruses, etc.
Software purchases to improve functionality and ease of use.
    Firewall and security protection services.
Software upgrades to better serve both you and I.
Crash recoveries made seamless due to improved backup resources.
    Administrative Labor

I think the moderators should at the least get a paid vacation once a year for their time and effort’s. Just look at what umpires make😂😂😂👍

I couldn't agree with you more.  This place is not possible without the helpers. If all +- 6,000 members sent only $20 per year, I could disable all ads, retire, spend more time improving and growing this place and pay my moderators a GOOD wage all at the same time.

The only reason we've met the last 3 years donation goals was because of ad revenue. Each time was close and usually around November before we meet that goal. If we didn't meet it, I wouldn't keep doing this because it can be time consuming, expensive and very stressful to keep it going.

Lastly, ad blockers are great. But if I keep having to pony up at the end of the year any difference to renew our yearly costs, I might lose interest and shut it down. It's because of donations, and ad revenue alone that I can keep this going. My goal is to get enough in donations to cover the costs, then get enough in reserves to pay for additional services if needed, and lastly get enough to cover income taxes. Selfishly, I don't feel like I should have to pony up $300 or so each year to meet our goals and then another $600 or so to cover income taxes. I guess I figure the 8 hours or so a week I spend keeping it going should be suffice for my contribution.

I take web security very serious. Can anyone tell me the last time your personal information was stolen or sold as a result of this site? Never. How about the last time you were scammed from something you sold here? Again, Never.  That type of privacy protection isn't easy, or cheap.

Just know that the moderators and myself appreciate every donor more than you know.  This board has been around for 23 years for a reason and that reason alone is viewership.

Why not just do it Luap and hit every member up for 20 bucks.
If it means you don’t have to pay out of your pocket and the mods get something for their time then I’m in. If you have a choice (as we currently do) whether or not to hit the “donate” button, it’s just too easy to say “I’ll do it tomorrow” and it just doesn’t get done..(that’s what happens with me..), but if you go to WG and are politely asked to address your donation status to facilitate another year of access, the decision is easy and you have it done while the kettle boils.
If there is a surplus next year, you could choose to roll it back in, or lock it away for when it’s needed.
I reckon you three guys should take a few days away on our dime, shoot all the good bits and post them here.
I’ll certainly chip in... :thumb:

I'm hesitant to do that. Although it would mean I could quit my day job and take care of you fine folks full-time.

But, the last thing I need is 6,000 people telling me how to do things. I feel like I get a lot of emails now, I cannot imagine having hundreds titled "I'm not paying for so and so to say such and such, I want a refund"...

Plus, out of 6,000 members, roughly only 1300 use it on a regular basis (at least once monthly). If I put a subscription on it, I think the other 4,700+- would bail.

I'd rather keep it the way it is for now.
