Got a roller starter
« on: May 25, 2021, 06:19:55 PM »
I have three kick start vintage Brit bikes. The damn cancer treatments have weakened me somewhat, well quite a bit. I can start the bikes once warmed up but cold starting is very difficult for me.I had to call my friend from here Petrus Rocks to fire up the BSA project bike...

Roller starters are not exactly a dime a dozen, I got one from Roller Starters in Australia, $950 USD to my door. 12 volt battery powered, it appears well made from thick aluminum plate. I considered fabricating a starter, screw it, I make everything, time to spend a few bucks..

Sounds like interesting bikes.  My short time with a Norton educated me on how much effort these old gals need to start.
The strength you have lost will come back- trust me on that one.  Maybe not 100%, but it definitely gets better.   I think I am as strong as I was before, but for some reason- I don't have the stamina I used to have, and I have a hard time knowing when to slow down.  You know how kids run, run, run, then hit a wall?  I don't know where the wall is.  So- i guess the point is that you'll get a lot of it back.  Take it slow but steady.

For me, the chemo has been on and for a year and a half and will continue to some degree for the rest of my life, whatever that may be.
Actually it was 1100 USD....   I have my 96 900 Monster with the magic button..I like kick starting bikes..Keep then in tune , a few jabs to free the clutch plates, a lazy prime kick and a firm boot, always started on the first try..

I'm lucky-  mine was only a year.  Radiation was a drag, I can tell you.  Well- I wish you the best on your journey.  You've had some pretty interesting stories that I've read here.  I hope to continue-

Gotta say though- I prefer the button.   I think my distaste for kickstarts came from my teenage-ish years owning poorly tuned or clapped out bikes.  A Pavlovian conditioning that gets into all of us for better or worse.
