SP windshield
« on: May 31, 2021, 08:05:26 PM »
Does anybody have a sequence of assembly for SP windshield mounting screw installation? There are five pieces to the screw system, screw, trim washer, rubber grommet, washer, nut. Does the rubber grommet (really an o-ring) go between the windshield and fairing or does it go on the outside under the washer? I can conceive of it going in either place but I think it goes between fairing and shield because of the rubber strip around the sheild that keeps it from going against the fairing.

I have replaced a few on early SP's and if I remember correctly the oring goes like you say, in between shield & fairing.

Thanks Steve! I worked on a few but memory for that time of my life is dying out for some reason, maybe old age?

O-ring goes under the trim washer which has a channel or grove that the o-ring fits into. I just went and checked mine to be sure.

Hmmm! Thanks sp! I guess I have some discovery ahead since I don't have the original parts and was going to try to collect some odds and ends to make up an original fastening system. Further research will happen. I have some American sized orings, will have to see if I can find some trim washers that fit. I'm in no hurry, original parts seem to be scarce so I'm going on my own journey.

The same set up was used on a lot of Guzzi of similar vintage like the 850 Le Mans 1,2 and 3. Try Moto Guzzi Classics, he may have a bunch. Or, you could stack a flat rubber washer under a flat washer. I think the whole idea is to help avoiding overtightening and causing stress cracks in the shield.

Thanks for helping old memories, I don't remember that oring on my LM3.

Same system on the SPII.  That special washer is called a 'finishing washer'.  It has an interior concave design to accept the o-ring.  The o-ring is on the outside of the plastic windscreen and acts as a cushion between the finishing washer and the plastic.
