Even Small Falls Have Consequences
« on: June 01, 2021, 03:01:30 PM »
So I took the Calvin down to Sedan, KS for the Chautauqua Hills Bluesfest on Friday. A bunch of old buddies were getting together for a belated bachelor party for one friend who got married, last year. The festival was a blast, but there was one damper. On my way into the campground, I took a wrong path, and immediately realized it. So I tried to cut across the grassy area to get back on the correct one. Unfortunately, there was a 1 1/2-2 foot dropoff that wasn't visible until I was almost on top of it, due to high grass in the area after the ground dropped. Once I spotted it, I tried to give it some gentle brake, but with all of the rain in the previous week, it was still too much for that wet, muddy grass, and down I went. The bike was fine, but I came down on my right arm, and had some rib pain throughout the weekend. Cut to this morning: I went into my chiropractor, thinking that I had just popped that rib out of place pretty badly, and could have it adjusted back to normal, but he wanted to take an x-ray, before adjusting me, just to be sure, which I was all for. Turns out that I broke a pretty good chunk off of the end of that rib, and now I'm out of work for the next 2-6 weeks. In hindsight, there's nothing that I could have done differently, other than picking the right path to begin with. If I hadn't given it brakes when I did and had gone over that drop off, I most likely would have fallen even harder, and had even worse injuries+damage to the bike. Just a reminder that sometimes, s*** happens, but even small errors have consequences.

Back in the 70s I had a friend that was waiting at a stoplight when a car behind him didn't quite get stopped and just tapped him hard enough that he lost his balance and went over sideways. The side if his helmet hit the curb hard but he wasn't hurt. He was convinced that without the helmet he would of had a skull fracture. Never know.
Glad the bike wasn't hurt but sorry to hear that you were. You will be sore for awhile.

That's why I always ride helmeted, even when it's just around town. The prognosis from my chiropractor is that I'll hurt all the time for a few days, then with certain movements for a few days. I'm to avoid doing anything that puts strain on my abdomen, and with rest and a little luck, I'll be able to pass the functional tests that will clear me for work with no restrictions in two weeks. Here's hoping.

The only time I’ve been down, off road and trail excluded, was several years back a farm tractor made an in signaled left turn as I was going around him. I hit the front end and went over the front end hitting the pavement hard. I knew I had fractured ribs but did go to the ER because I knew nothing can be done about cracked ribs but wrapping up.
I couldn’t move much for deodars but after a couple weeks heal up fine.
A few years later I had to get an MRI for a gut issue I was going through and the technician ask me when I had broken my back. The only thing I could control to was at the same time I had broken my ribs. I was so sore and hurting so bad when I had to move I must have not realized some of the pain was coming from my back also.
All this stuff falls under the category of $#~+ happens 🤔😂
Glad you weren’t hurt any worse 👍

Dang Danny, I'm surprised you'd pass in an area where someone can make a left turn.

Legal pass John on a farm tractor. Actually he simply made a U-turn in the middle of the road with our even turning around to see if it was safe to do so. No signal period but thanks for busting my chops👍

Sorry Big Dan. When you get on the forum someone will add insult to injury.   Even a buddy.   :lipsrsealed:

That’s a fact LR and I help John pass time talking to him when he’s bored on the road. With friends like that I hope I don’t have any enemies here😂😂😂

Heal fast.  I’m sure there’s a lesson in there somewhere. I can remember every one of my mishaps and the one with the longest period of pain was trying to catch a falling /5 in a parking lot.  I should have let it just drop.
