Hello everybody,
I have a 16 v7ii stone with 40k and Im trying to replace the head gaskets. Im having trouble removing the valve part to get to the head. Is there a way to do this without damaging the fins?

Do you mean the gaskets are sticking? If so, a rubber mallet has worked for me in the past. Maybe shoot some WD40 or PB BlastR in there.

to remove these two nuts. This is going beyond what Im able to get done.

Oh yeah, I was going to ask if you made sure you got all the bolts and nuts out. I’m no mechanical genius, but I’ve taken them off as well when I had to replace a head due to to a seized header stud. Wasn’t too hard, just got to make sure you get them torqued appropriately and keep things clean in there.

It does make things easier! Thanks for the info. The header seems to be preventing removal. I did get the fitting off. Do I need to remove the entire exhaust?

Thanks! He doesnt put any goop or sealant on the gasket. Ive been reading i need to put permatex300. I have new OEM metal gaskets. Should I?

Theres a nick and scratches all around. Do I need to have it resurfaced?

Looks like the old gasket was scraped off with a metal instrument that scratched the surface. A light sanding on a flat surface might help, but I wouldn't chance it.
The gouge looks deep enough that you would have to remove too much material. It doesn't go across the contact surface, so I wouldn't worry about it... provided you use the Super 300.
If it leaks again, then I would bring the heads to a machine shop to get cleaned/checked.

The old one peeled right off. I havent looked at the other side yet. As far as I know Im the only one thats monkeyed with it. Ill try the permatex and see what happens. Thanks for the help.

FWIW, small block head gasket leaks are mentioned in Guzziology, and a brush on sealant is recommended. Those look just like the head gaskets on my V65, which I just replaced, along with the valves. No leaks!

When I rebuilt the heads on a customer's V65SP and few years ago, I bought the valves, guides and seals from MG Cycle. I also "updated" to Nevada (single) springs which required the seats and retainers from the same model, all purchased from Harper's.

These heads had only 18k miles, guides had no discernible wear. I bought valves from MG Cycle and hand lapped them in. Re-used the springs and retainers.

A sheet of 400 grit wet or dry on a piece of glass is what most people use to get out those nicks. Use a figure 8 pattern.

They leaked because nobody re-torque them at the 600 mile first service. Don't make the same mistake.
