Modular Helmet failure (NGC)

Just thought I'd post this here incase anyone is using a Scorpion Modular helmet. Specifically a model EXO-GT920 or a EXO-GT3000. My 6 month old GT950 modular failed at the chin bar pivot. I've never had a structural failure of any helmet I've owned and was astounded at the flimsy attachment point on this Scorpion. To be fair I also have a Scorpion EXO-AT950 which I've been very happy with for several years. But in looking at the two closely for the first time after the failure, it's clear the AT model uses a more robust pivot mechanism with a much larger screw. Here are a couple of photos of what happened to the GT920 (the GT3000 uses the exact same attachment)
I don't know if you can tell from the photos, but the plastic center of the base plate simply tore out, allowing the chin bar to come loose. What looks like a black washer, is in fact part of the base plate. The tiny short screw is all that holds the chin bar pivot to the side of the helmet. No nylon washer or anything to allow the chin bar to pivot open and closed freely. Also, the short screw has no shoulder to prevent over-tightening (which is probably what I did, as the other side had come completely unscrewed a few days before, so I snugged them both down, but I didn't go crazy or anything)
Anyway, I think it's a crummy, weak design that would never hold up to any serious impact, and wanted to make anyone who might have a Scorpion helmet aware. I should probably add the GT920 is now discontinued, but the similar GT3000 is still listed as a current model.

The pivot piece has nothing to do with locking it in place. It's the locks that are the important part.
I always check the Sharps site when looking for helmets as they actually test for the locking system

I disagree. While the locking pins are important (metal, not plastic, etc.) when the entire side of the chin bar is held on by a tiny, thin piece of plastic, it's likely to be torn off in a crash no matter what the locking pins are made of. And then there's the simple fact that I now have a 6 month old helmet that is completely unusable. Of course, any modular is a compromise when compared to a one-piece helmet. There's a reason Arai refuses to make one.

It is a pretty cheap helmet by today's standards. (guzzi content)

Call scorpion, they have a good warranty. I loved the EXO 900 series, but they quit that one. I got a 950 but the fit isn't right for me. Best thing they have and don't promote is their proprietary anti fog coating. Bombardier has it for Canada.

Hmmmm. My Shoei Neotec (modular) is due for replacement. I was considering a Scorpion, but, may have to reconsider.

As I said, the newer designs like my AT950 use a much larger external screw to attach the chin-bar. The screw-head is about the size of a nickel and seems far more robust than the tiny screw and side plate that broke on my GT920. It's easy to tell which is which just by looking, even in the photos the larger pivot screw is clearly visible. For years I only wore Arai, as they were by far the most comfortable helmet for my head shape. But features like a drop-down sun visor and flip-up chin bar are just so much more convenient when touring. Shoei just doesn't quite fit my head shape. Mediums are just a bit too large for me, and I can't even squeeze into a small. Among current offerings, the Scorpions fit me best. I also dislike the plastic quick-release strap that so many helmet companies use now (like the new Shoes Neotec modular)
