T3 Chilton Torque Spec cheat sheet and question
« on: August 11, 2021, 01:13:20 PM »
Attached is a torque cheat sheet I just made (and carefully proofed) from the Chilton Motorcycle Repair Manual, 1976 edition (I think). I plan to tape it above my workbench to keep me from messing unnecessarily with the torque specs in the factory manual, which I find to be a pain to deal with since the references to the various nuts and bolts can be indirect, to say the least. I also converted ft-lb readings in the original table to in-lbs where appropriate for the ranges of my two Craftsman beam-type torque wrenches. (Back in the day, "ft lb" was the colloquial term before pedantry had its final victory.)

Now to my question: Are the Chilton specs more reliable than the factory ones? It is often said here that the factory torque values are not reliable. Do they ever conflict with each other?

Thanks,

Moto

Details:

The table I made comes from the section of the Chilton manual covering the V700, V750, 750 Sport, 750 S, V850, 850T and 850-T3 [my bike].

If any of you decide to use my table, you should know that I omitted a couple of values for the 850 T and the loop frames that were in the original tables. These are:

cylinder head for V700, V750, V850, 27 ft-lb;

connecting rod nuts for the same three models: 25 ft-lb;

brake anchor, rear drum brake: 32 ft-lb.

The lower frame rail allen bolt and top steering stem nut specs are listed as applying only to the Sport and the 850T/T3.

At Chilton we used to take MOST SPECS direct from the OEM manuals.

That particular manual was made before my time with the company and it's always possible that one particularly enthusiastic editor found another source and supplemented the OEM manual info. But that was usually pretty rare.

There are two entries in the Chilton manual that I can't find anywhere in the factory workshop manual (for the V7 Sport, 750 S, 850-T and 850-T3), namely, the torque values for the "disk brake caliper mounts" and the "disc brake caliper bolts." (I checked the T and T3 supplements in it.) So your predecessor at Chilton did more than just copy info from the OEM manual!

It's difficult to know without an exhaustive search whether every other entry in the Chilton manual agrees with one that can be found in the OEM version. Sometimes I find I have to consult the listed part number in the Parts diagrams to make sure I get the torque associated correctly.

I'm generally very impressed with that Chilton manual. It is concise, clear, and could teach a thing or two to the Mandello crew.

That's the factory work shop manual, up through the 850T revision. It's not the same as the Chilton tables, though it may not be inconsistent with them.

Perhaps but they normally would have very few other resources. For instance they wouldn't have had say detailed fastener data from which they would generate their own values. They might have had an OEM service bulletin or cross referenced the part from another model or even manufacturer if they used the same parts. Past that it could be a swag. I'm a rare instance the editor might have owned one or more and simply written the value he used but that's a stretch and rare. Not unheard of, but rare.

Just one minor point.
Could you shrink the margin at the top.in its present form my printer misses the bottom line.
Thanks for providing this, I will stick it on my wall, should be close enough for a Convert.

I adjusted the margin and reloaded the image in my original post. Let me know if it still needs tweaking.

Should be fine for the Convert; it and the T3 were developed in parallel, I understand.
