Seeking Advice - Cali Stone Build
« on: November 04, 2021, 06:05:30 AM »
Guess I’ll go ahead and make this a kind of rebuild thread though it’s not really a rebuild thread so much as a remove thread  as I just got the recently acquired Stone home and in the process of removing/replacing a lot of old and/or parts I’m not using that came on the bike like the forward controls.  It’s a 2003 Stone with - if odo is original - 26k miles.  In addition to eventually doing a full service with all fluids changed and so forth, I also plan on blowing out the breather hose which I’m pretty sure at some time in the past was clogged.  I also have a Harper’s Spring service kit on the way with new seals, plugs, etc.  My plan for now is to install Hyperpro spring set on forks, possibly a dual disc to the front, LED bulb for headlight, new air filter, seal rims for tubeless capability, and other such things.  But first things first.  In this process it’s becoming apparent - since I’m not finding as many replacement parts on ebay (and no longer available from MG) - that I guess I’ll go seeking here for options and such depending.  I have a WTB thread going in classifieds if anyone has some stock pegs or turn signals in decent condition.
Instead of putting all my questions up at once and then having everyone respond to different questions and such, I think what I’ll do here is just start with a couple basic questions and then go from there with other questions posted later after I get satisfactory answers to my initial ones.  Not a very interesting picture here but it’s where things are currently.

My first question is this.  Former owner installed forward controls on the bike but did not bother to keep any of the stock parts around to take it back.  As you know, the Cali 1100 bikes have the 2 hole mount thing for the pegs.  I’m having a hard time sourcing (MG no longer sells and Ebay is pretty crazy prices for this one little piece that usually is posted not solely but along with a more expensive peg part and/or linkage).  The pic here of what I’ve circled is obviously not my bike but that is the part I’m trying to find for both sides.  In absence of this part, has anyone fabricated or come to a different solution even for the 2 hole mount?  Question make sense?  I also “think”(?) a few of the V7 models have this same 2 hole subframe or at least mount and wonder if the distance between the 2 holes is the same - if so, I could likely source the part that way if MG is still selling them.

Are you looking for the plate?  If you are then, I would be happy to make a couple up and send them for the price of shipping.  If you want the peg to be moved a bit I can alter the part a little.  I made lowering plates for mine way back to let my knees have less of a bend.

Very generous offer from Mike!  Mark E. also had a solution to move the pegs back using plates. My approach was a bit more expensive: Full foot controls from an SP II.

This is what I did to move the controls 6" rearward, the controls are fairly easy to find but you will need to make the mounting brackets.

I might have a set of stock front pegs and brackets, I will check to see if I can find them.

Mike, that is fantastically generous of you but I would insist you let me pay you at least a little something for them.  And yes, if you can create them to be slightly lower and/or rearward, super.

I will get a picture of what I have on my 02 Stone and make a plan from there.  Be thoughtful that the brake and shifter will possibly need to be reworked also.  I get a pic up later today.

Sounds great.  Let me first check in here with Guzzi below and then follow up with you.

Guzzi, definitely let me know if you have these.  I’d certainly be interested.

Hey Joe!  Hope you are doing well.  Thanks so much for the offer; yet, I think I’m set mostly.  I already have a HB sissy bar/rear luggage rack for it, the gas tank and paint are in “decent” condition though I am giving some thought to painting it, and seat is fine as well.  But I will keep these in mind.

Mike is going to build the plates for me.  If anyone has a decent condition set of pegs shoot me a pic of them and send me a pm and I’ll give you my number or email to send.

 other side Shifter

Boy that looks a whole lot nicer than the heel-toe shifter on my Cal Spec. And a whole lot nice than just cutting the heel off.

I have also purchased a different front master cylinder and caliper to add the 2nd disc to the front.  Probably a long shot but would anyone have a decent condition rotor around I could use/buy from you?

The shifter has been a work in progress.  In the current form the length and feel on your foot is good.  The downfall is in trying to shorten the throw.  It makes for a pretty hard push and the feel is not positive.  It has been hard to replicate how well the heel shift works with a conventional shifter.  I took that shifter off as it was interfering with my wife's foot on the rear pegs.  If I rode alone most of the time I think I would prefer the heel and toe shifter.

I took a box of parts to Chad at Retro Wrench off 9th and Oak St.  The peg mounts may be in the box.

I have a set of hyper pro damper in a set of forks.  My opinion, not worth the effort.  It is a mess to adjust them.  What I would do is source a set of Sport or Bassa fork tubes or internals and drop them in.  You will then have compression and rebound dampening.

Foot peg rubbers are either round or semi round.  They are inter changeable on the metal peg.

The front hub will take another brake disc. The Fork lower tube will have to be replaced to except the caliper.  A larger m.c. will be required.  You will need the rotor carrier to mount on hub and longer screws.

You need to come  by my house and I can show you what I have done and give you some direction.  Depending how much money You have, I can help you break the bank on upgrades, repairs and modifications.

i really like the looks of those Mike, nicely done. Due to the heel toe, I've settled on the boards (after LOTS of back and forth) because the heel toe does shift smoothly, and is so easy with the boards in place. also the height of the  boards mirrors the 1" or so drop that your plates yield. And it's pretty clean.

Thanks, John, for all the good advice.  I might take you up on that visit soon.  I do beg to respectfully differ on the Hyperpro springs.  Many years back, before I was an idiot and now attempt to work on most of my bikes myself , you actually installed a Hyperpro set in a Cali Special I had back then.  I thought it made a really nice difference but I do recall the Special's forks and shock were about shot by then so any improvement would have been better per se.

she's in pretty good nick, but Brian's journey is of great interest. The forks need to be addressed this winter. And sorry about Rodsmiths bike. I was in on that too. Heard him call you out of drawing day.

Getting further into the work here.  My Stone came with a lot of oil sprayed about on the engine.  I consulted here and also Curtis Harper.  I initially thought maybe a broken down seal or something but checking threads and also Curtis advice said likely breather system issue.  Sure enough, last night I got around to pulling all the breather hoses and checking the ball valve on top of the rear portion of the engine.  Wow.  Many of the hoses, especially the large one very cracked and damaged.  Additionally, the ball valve was totally stuck and full of some of the scariest junk ever   Also, inside the larger main hose off the back of the engine, lots and lots of rusty mayo and junk.  I’ll replace all the hoses and clean the ball valve up enough so that it’s moving freely.  With all the hoses off, is there a recommended way to try and clean/flush the interior of the frame?   From some other threads I see where some have connected a water hose to the larger frame hole and flushed system that way, then putting in POR 15 to try and protect from rust later; yet, I can’t imagine how they got the POR-15 into the frame?  I literally had no idea the frame played such a role in the breather system on the Tonti.

No one is asking for an update here  :boozing:  but just figured I’d post that I received the mounts from Mike and they are fantastic.  What great and generous work.  In an effort to pay it forward of sorts, I’ll be offering up the forward controls and foot boards free to a home minus shipping.  They are not in great condition but definitely could be cleaned up with some wool and so forth.  Hit me up if you are interested.

As per the bike, the project grows and grows as these things will.  I now have the forks and triple tree off and in the process of installing new seals for socks and new bearings for steering head.  I also have acquired 2 calipers, a new master cylinder, and am still seeking a rotor for adding a disc to the front end.  Tank is now at my sandblaster and when I get it back I have plans to, gulp, try my hand at painting with a harbor freight gun, decals, etc.  Also have plans to either replace or redo the tail light/turn signal setup.

I'm interested in the forwards, etc. .  I have a Bakers cyst behind my  knee and prefer forwards, like on my FXR, are defiantly more comfy than the Stone.  However, folks refuse to believe I prefer riding the MG.  Except for long distances where the Harley is more comfortable because of the knees.   BTW...you did not like forwards?  Are the jugs  the way ?

Awesome!  The Calstone is a great machine.  I have an '02 that I bought as a project and have been quite pleased with it.  It's was fun to get back on the road and it has been reliable.  Ok, here's a couple of pics...

I just rattle-canned it with a 2 part matte clear.  Have fun with it!

Thanks so much for the offer but I apologize, I ordered a used rotor off ebay this past weekend and had not updated the thread to reflect this.  If the used one looks bad upon arrival I'll definitely get back with you on yours.
