GPS and mounts - V85TT
« on: November 05, 2021, 12:08:57 PM »

V85TT owners ,

What are you using for PGS and mounts?

The GPS I am using is a Garmin Zumo 550 on my other MG's is not available anymore (20 yrs old) and the mounts are also no longer available either.

So I am just starting to look for a replacement

I got this mount:  https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005001474853697.html?spm=a2g0s.12269583.0.0.1da020caPjolus
for about $20, fits great and perfect location for it.

I got a Garmin XT GPS, it is great - worth every penny.  I am certain others will offer less capable but less expensive models. Motorcycle specific settings, download maps, updates over wifi etc.

I went with the Garmin Montana 680 T. It's a hand held battery powered unit and I mounted it on a RAM mount. I have yet to run the battery down in a day, I didn't have to wire anything, it's weatherproof and slips easily into my pocket if I go in somewhere. Also works for geocaching.

However I don't have th 85TT it works well in the Tenere 700  :thumb:

Another vote here for the Garmin 600 series on a Ram mount.  It may not have all the spiffy motorcycle features of a spiffy motorcycle unit with... spiffy motocycle features?  But it's reliable, solid, and the battery lasts for hours if I take it off the bike for a hike, or for use on other continents.

Tom,

I’m still using my Zumo 660 on a RAM mount.  The mount was still available, but I bought it over 2 years ago.

I purchased the Moto Guzzi Multimedia Platform for the V85, which is basically software tied to my mobile phone.  It has a navigator function, which is loaded from the mobile phone, and displays on the V85 screen and can also be linked to the bluetooth helmet.

The next two turns are displayed on the screen, showing a countdown to the next turn, the direction of the next two turn (it also shows roundabouts, or traffic circles for the Americans).

Cost me US$198.00 from AF1 Racing.  It may be cheaper now.

For my other motorcycles, I sometimes use a Beeline navigator, a small disk that displays the countdown to the next turn (including roundabouts).  It too is driven from an app on my phone.  There is a motorcycle and a push bike version, but I've learnt not to trust it, seems like it gets more confused than me!

I bought the SW Motech mount and I'm very pleased with it. Mounted my old Zumo 550 to it and away we go. This one...

Another vote for the Garmin Nuvi XT

I’m using the gps mount bar from here.  Mounts on both stock windshield posts instead of just 2 like the cheapo Chinese ones on ebay.
 http://www.eglidegoodies.com/id368.html

Along with a 3d printed nuvi mount here:  https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4568379

And lastly this 3d printed  mount cover for when I’m not using the Garmin: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4950458

First post for me here, BTW.  Hi.

RAM ball with U bolt on the handlebar. RAM Quick Grip mount for my phone (because I learned long ago that the overpriced Garmins can't be relied on).

Make your own. I used a piece of 1 inch flat bar and bent to suit the top two screen mount holes. 1 inch Ram Ball in the centre and a small extension to hold the mount.

Until you get in a place with no interneck and your fancy smart phone can't connect.

Thanks for letting us know that you are clueless.

A smartphone has an actual GPS chip set. In fact, because they are used  in other countries, they often are required to have GPS, Glonass, Beidou and Galaleo receivers. So they are often more accurate, and perform better under trees and in buildings, then a crappy dedicated GPS.

I have a number of apps on my phone that store the maps on the phone, and work great without a data connection. CoPilot, OSMand, Locus, and Maprika. Even Google maps allows you to download regions to use when you are out of touch. I guess you didn't know that either.  If you have a dedicated GPS, you have, maybe one mapset.

Today I spent hours out on forest services roads. No cell towers anywhere, just me, the mountains and streams, and my smartphone apps. Plus it takes quality photos BTW.

And by the way, I have found the smartphones are much more rugged than dedicated GPS units. I've killed three Garmins over the years, but my phones keep on working.
