'59 Cushman Super Eagle

Cool little bike...Restorred one back in the day...8HP....kick start....foot clutch...2 speed (Hi and Low) tank shift!   Maybe 30+ mph top speed, downhill with a tail wind!!  (Like a miniature Harley!!)

I would think any of the Eagles should get in high 40s as to MPH. My 4HP step thru ran over 30 with my 100 lbs. on board!!

Later on, they converted those Eagles with the 18HP "Vanguard" motor, and I am sure they would run 40+ mph

When I was 13yo there were a number of them at our Jr. High since you could ride scooters at 14yo in Michigan. So a month before my 14th birthday they change the law to 16yo, same as for an auto license. I doubt I could have afforded the Cushman anyway.

They say back in the day, it was popular for 14-year olds to use to deliver papers on their local paper routes...

Filling a gap between bicycles and motorcycles, the Cushman scooter was popular among high school students, adults (as an economical "second car") and small businesses. Passenger and cargo models were available. Farmers, salesmen, housewives, and many other people ran errands, made deliveries, and enjoyed pleasure trips. In particular, the Cushman scooter provided expanded personal mobility for two generations of young people. Some states required a driver's license, and some did not require one.

Once while at Two Wheels of Suches in GA (was TWO), the place was swarmed by a group of Cushmans.  The machines where beautiful and the owner/riders were having a hoot!  I don't know which models they were, but they sure appeared to be pretty zippy!

I read that as well, so, perhaps 52 mph downhill with a 50 pound rider!!

Actually that squares with my memory as well as they were a LOT faster than my '52 Allstate step thru. Note~ the 9 HP Mustangs were around 60 and the 12.5 Thoroughbreds  would touch 70. My 9HP Honda S90 would do 55+. All this thru the fog of nearly 79 years!
