Norge 220,000 k service schedule
« on: February 10, 2022, 03:23:51 AM »
I’ve posted a bit too much lately, but really thought some Norge owners might get some benefit.
This is the 21st service I’ve done on this bike and I’ve honed the categories over the journey. The manual gives some odd intervals for certain jobs and leaves a fair bit out in my opinion.
Here is what I do, it contains extraneous tasks that if performed, ensure nothing (that I can think of), gets left out and makes the everyday riding experience fully enjoyable.

Every 20,000 km.                                                                        Every intermediate 10,000 km.

Engine oil change & filter.                                                             Engine/gearbox/bevelbox oil change
Gearbox oil change                                                                      Throttle body balance
Rear bevel box oil change.                                                            Check for DTC’s
Front brake fluid change/bleed
Rear brake fluid change/ bleed
Clutch fluid change/bleed
Brake pads remove, wire brush, check/replace
Rear caliper slide pins clean grease
Inner and outer spark plugs replace
Bowden cable/s check
Steering head bearings check for smooth operation
Wheel bearings check
Wheels balanced and true/spokes checked for tension
Disc/s bobbins check for non binding
Discs clean
Air filter replace
Valve clearance check/adjust
Air box oil purge
Fuel pipe check
Fork oil change
Fork seals check
Alternator belt check/adjust/replace
Clutch/front brake/gear/rear brake lever pivots clean and grease
Battery terminals clean
Tank cap water trap drain clear
Front fork float
Side and centre stand pivot clean/grease
Throttle body balance
TPS reset
Check for DTC’s

There will of course be other items that crop up, such as swingarm bearings, headstem bearings and such, but I tend to do them at the likes of 60,000-120,000-180,000 sort of thing, but I think the above covers most of the routine stuff. It also ensures that your levers are nice and smooth and the bike feels “loose and liquid..”
Oh BTW..
I tried to get a set of new Pilot 5’s for the trip but were unavailable, so I got a set of Pilot 6’s.

They’ll be gone by trip’s end...

I love it Peter! Basically, you don't like 'trouble in the streets any more than I did. I've aged out of big miles. Sad to say.

Ever hear of Grosjean numbers? Known him for years, but we've never met. He's an interesting guy. Doug is fanatical about number sequences on odometers. He has a following of pedal bikers and bmw MC owners and fools like me. Also a federal titled oarsman on fast water in bad a**ed water.
We I grow up I wanna be like you. Good fortune,  R3~

I should hasten to add.
The bike has done 197,000 km not 200,000.
I’m doing the service early because I want the the odometer to turn over 200 in Mandello. I expect to do 20,000 on the trip and I usually arrange to have the oils changed at Agostini’s.

I'm wondering what kind of lifetime you see out of your fork bushings.

Well the seals have never been changed and it gets new Bel Ray oil every 20,000 k.
So in the light of that...
I’ve no idea.
But I had them out yesterday and they feel firm in the sliders, I think the staunchions are a a full length fit in the sliders. But I must confess I’m not sure.

So the coating is still present on the bushings?

This seems like one of those wear items that varies substantially between different bikes.  I've had some bikes never wear them out, and some wear them out pretty badly in 30,000km.

Well I don’t know Audio.
When I do the forks, I just remove them, upend the contents, flush them and refill. I’ve never had the staunchions out of the sliders. They are rock solid when you push/pull them unladen.

It might be time for new bushings.  Generally they are a bronze base with some kind of teflon coating, and that dark teflon coating will wear off eventually and they won't slide as freely.  I'm amazed at the lifetime you've gotten out of the original fork seals, that's incredibly impressive!  I also looked through the service manual and the forks on these bikes look fairly easy to do.  Maybe I'll get my act together and do a write up.

I always thought so too, but I’m not exaggerating.
They are the originals.
