California Vintage with mods up for auction
« on: March 01, 2022, 06:29:38 AM »
Should be interesting to see where this one ends up. I think it’s the first Vintage to pop up on BaT.

Wow! nice! I just bought the same fork lowers deflectors in anticipation of spring. does anyone else use Avon roadrider II tires? only thing I dislike is the big ugly placard in the middle of the tank.
is anyone familiar with GTM performance? nice all around package for $1600.
interesting blackout scheme with valve covers, TB covers and footwell covers matching the exhaust.
I wager this goes for double the $4700 I paid for my '07 last year!
its not the end of the world...but you can see it from here!

I sold my low mileage 07 CalVin a couple years ago for 4500.00.
I’d be surprised if this one brings much more than that.

The CalVins seemed to have bottomed out in price and asking prices have been rising in my area. Some are really high; who knows what they're actually selling for.

Someone has sunk a fair bit of coin into it.

The GTM fueling scares me. Pete & Beetle have had some animated discussions on the topic of the overly rich fueling over the whole rpm range in those maps.

I've only looked at one bike,a used Stelvio with a new replacement motor at a local dealer that had that ECU upgrade. The overly rich fueling had apparently overwhelmed the lubrication system and burnt the bottom end. fwiw idk

Curious to see how the bidding and the comments/opinions play out

Just a WAG on my part, but I think it will double that $4500 number. Things get really whacked on that auction site.

I have the GTM reflash on my '03 Cal Titanium.  It runs just fine, better than the stock map for sure.  Who knows what else was done to that Stelvio after the reflash.  You'd have fouled plugs and all sorts of other problems before enough unburned fuel washed into the oil to trash the bottom end. GTM maps are constructed on a dyno, not just someone's guess.  I'm sure this bike is optimal, especially with the airbox and exhaust updates.

This bike has been listed a few times.  I remember seeing it on Auto Trader for $8500 in 2020.  Looks like it was in Utah for a bit.  I'm guessing the current owner did the matte black treatment on things.  Curious as to where the upper windscreen bracket went.

I really like it. Too late in my life to go there, tho. It's kind of a twin to my favorite Guzzi, my black 84 Cal 2.

Dave, would that bracket be considered a structural component to the WS mounts?
IOW, could the windshield integrity be compromised without it?

I sold my 08 CalVin for $5000 CDN two years ago....It had a Beetle map, Matris front suspension and Ikons out back.  Many extra bits were included in the sale.

Curious to see where this goes.

The CalVin motor is NOT a hydro motor.

Good question - I imagine it provides some sort of structure to the frame.  Otherwise Moto Guzzi would have saved the cost of the steel :-) .

G

Yeah well mostly/sorta.

After the hydro debacle Guzzi went with what was basically a Cali 1100 big block that shared design specs with the Breva 1100 (dual plug head and all IIRC).

But not a CARC and so still no belt driven alternator or the like.

Did the Cal Vin get the CARC style oil pan with external oil filter or was it still a drop the pan deal?

that is one clean machine....

I've had 2 cal vins over the years and put maybe 150,000 miles on them as my main long distance tourer... Second one is still in active service...

Mine both ended up with a fair few mods so it's quite strange for me to see one mostly stock....

That windscreen! One of the most beautiful ever put on the front of a motorcycle and almost certainly one of the worst in terms of performance, every time I look at one I can still hear the buffeting and my helmet being shook all over the place...wabba wabba wabba wabba,

Of course, it's probably ok if you never ride the bike much faster than 60mph

will be interesting to see what this goes for

Dave

You're right, I didn't know the previous owner of the Stelvio, or any of the details on use, abuse, maintenance etc or the possible aspect of DLC on the flat tappets on the 4V's, being a contributing factor as well.

At the time I was shocked to learn 2nd hand from the sales person, that the engine had been replaced by Piaggio under warranty, that went against everything I'd ever read concerning their lack of after sales support.

I'm not a GTM basher, I have no skin in the game or an axe to grind; I happen to have one of their older SS exhausts on my Griso, and other than an overly loose fit on the collector pipe, it's reasonable quality.

What I do know, is that over the years, I've read Pete and Beetle voice concerns and caution on the overly rich, crude GT mapping with possible negative effects. Were their opinions flavored due to historical bad blood, possibly.

As GT has evolved to GTM, have methods and practices changed and improved, probably, they're still in business, they must be doing something right, idk.

What I'm certain of, is that the only guzzi I ever looked at personally, that had suffered a catastrophic engine failure, also happened to be the only guzzi, that had the GT fuel mapping on the ECU.

That left an impression on me.

As they say, that and a buck, still won't get you a coffee at Tim Hortons.

Back to the OP re the CalVin on BAT, I agree with Guzzistajohn, it's over weight, ponderous etc, and when I first got mine and was throwing it around back country roads putting the Tonti frame racing heritage to the test, I was very disappointed in it. Ride it like Ricky Racer and push the limits, it wallows around like a whale.

But once I changed my mind set, and learned to ride my CalVin within the design parameters,  it's become my favorite dependable ride. The upright ergos still jar my spine on occasion, an airhawk and rolling the bars forward have helped a lot.

Day in, day out, it's a nice bike.

Just a WAG, with the BAT frenzy wildcard, I think it'll go around $8200

Hi Kelly

Mine was the same.  I tried to address this with suspension upgrades and a trip to Accelerated Technologies (suspension shop).  No joy.  I think that maybe it has something to do with the 500 pounds of fibreglass & steel hanging out behind rear axle.

Beautiful bike though.

I think yo're right - around $8K.

Keepin’ score on the *WAG’s...

80 CX100-        $8200
Geoff-              $8000
SDCR-              $9100
Mayor of BBQ.   $6100
Bikertim.           $7600

*All guess’s have a +/- of $100.

BTW, is adding “ studs” to your motorcycle tires a thing? My initial impression, is that the studs could make for slippery handling.
