NGC what's the best email service?
« on: March 24, 2022, 09:13:00 PM »
I'm getting pretty fed up with yahoo mail. It will be a major pain to get a new email address but I'm contemplating doing so.
So, what's the best no bull service? One thing I'm sure of, I won't be using GMail.

My latest irritation are the little floating windows below the main mail text.. bottom of screen.. it's a new look I guess..this is on the web not an app.
They are history of the pages I recently looked at. When you start a new email or whatever the little windows all collapse and fly away off the page, at first I'm like, what the hey, did I just delete or loose something?
I don't need distraction like that. If I want to go back to an email I already dealt with I can select it on the left hand side of the page.
Just a pet peeve, they make changes that don't make sense, I guess some metadata says you must get a new look.. a lot of places on the internet are like that. My bank that I just closed does the same thing. I like being in a rut and knowing what to expect.

If your using a PC of some type rather than a phone. You should be able to use Mozilla Thunderbird (Mozilla Firefox) as your email program rather than going to the web site for your mail. It works with Earthliink, Google and AT&T (IIRR ATT is with Yahoo mail for web access) mail. If your using a phone. I think there is a Thunderbird for Apple and Android, not sure though.

Good luck,

Check into NET ZERO.  I've had it for 20+ years for two of my work and facebook accounts with little to no spam and it's free.

Try Easydns.com. For $35/yr you can have your own domain (fotoguzzi.net is available) and three email addresses.

Thunderbird is an email client from Mozilla (think Firefox). It interfaces with your email provider but is not a provider itself. Been using it for about 20 years. No pop ups of any kind and its free. It does work on Macs as well as Windows boxes. Most all internet providers have email, no? Get an address from your internet provider and see if Thunderbird will work with it. All that info should be at your providers website.

I have used my local internet provider for over 20 years and no issues. I keep a Yahoo address that I give out to "undesirables" that are going to drive me nuts.

I have a dozen email addresses for various reasons.
A couple of Yahoo email addresses, that are used to collect spam. Any time someone requires an email address to sign up for something, they get my Yahoo address. I generally just ignore that mess.
I have an ATT email, because I have ATT as my DSL provider. I try not to give it to many people, and it only gets a little spam on it.
I have an Outlook email address (used to be called Hotmail) that is my general purpose address. It does get spam, but Outlook is decent at filtering the spam.
And of course I have a Gmail account for my Android devices, but I seldom use that.
Good judgement comes from experience.
And experience. That comes from poor judgement.

I have three email addresses.  One that I use, two forced on me.  I don't get changing.

I'm not sure how many people use an email client anymore.. I download all of my important emails..I can search my emails going back to about 1996.

I've used Eudora, which became Penelope? which became Thunderbird since the early 90s. As someone said you can use it with about any email provider. But you need to understand a client is a local service, your downloading your email onto your computer. Thunderbird would be a good option for cleaning up your current email interface. Or as someone suggested for interfacing with the probably free email service you get from your ISP. But then you have to deal with migrating or forwarding.

I've had EarthLink since about 1998. It's about $20 a month. It has built in spam filtering. It's extremely effective. If you're not in my white list of domain names or addresses an outgoing message is sent to request my approval and the incoming message goes to a spam folder for my review. I'd estimate it's 99% effective in screening my email.

With EarthLink you can use the webmail interface while on the go from any browser. They also have an app that I use on my phone and tablet. It's a pretty basic app, not a lot of functionality but works adequately for sending and reading email.

I just spent nearly two hours and transferred to seven people with my current provider (Century Link)
There website says I can have up to 10 email addresses but none of the people I chatted and phoned with could help me add an address. That company is screwed up. 50MBPS It costs $44/mo lifetime.
I will look into EarthLink
I stream all my TV and movies etc, wondering if 25mbps is enough.
Verizon has 25-50MBPS for $40 for two years.
Do any of you use Verizon for home internet?
I do have an iCloud email account now and so far that is clean from any spam emails.

You stated that it would be a pain to give everyone your new email.

As mentioned, try Thunderbird instead of going to the Yahoo web mail site. Only takes a few minutes to set up.

I agree with Tim, this is your quickest and simplist fix. Then, if you need a mobile email client for your phone rather then using the Yahoo web interface you could try K9 email (I don't know about iPhones though. I found K9 to be very similar to Thunderbird so minimal learning curve

PS. Let's not confuse email accounts with ISPs. I use EarthLink for email. My ISP is Mediacom. Yes I pay for each.

AT&T does use Yahoo mail. I can use the web or Thunderbird to check it. Earthlink I believe has it's own email server.

If on a phone, I think Gmail you can add other accounts and check them with the Gmail app.

Fotoguzzi,

Have you looked into yahoo mail browser settings?  Mine doesn't look like yours.  I typically browse email in a Firefox window on my PC.  Maybe revert back to Yahoo classic Mail in the settings.  I am not exactly happy with Yahoo either.  Amongst other issues, there have been several security breaches in past years.  For me, the PIA factor of changing has not yet been overcome by the PIA factor of using Yahoo.

I've had Hotmail/Outlook and Gmail for years (20+). Both are good. Outlook IMO is a bit better, and easier to pair with the Outlook Program, and easier to filter/block spam and organize.  I use hotmail/outlook for all web based activity and Gmail for all personal correspondence.

I will also add a vote for Outlook. I have been using it for a few years now and the combination of email with access to online versions of Word/Excel/Powerpoint (through Office 365 family) for the whole family (kids and wife) makes this a no-brainer. As I get older, I don't really have the patience to run my own email service (or figure out why something is not working).

Outlook just works and has been rock solid for us!
